Wiona stared at her phone, still trying to process. “Eight o’clock? You’re picking me up? Why so early?”
Conrad gave her that small, knowing smile, his eyes locked on hers. “Because I’m afraid you’ll change your mind. We’re getting our marriage license.”
Marriage license? Tomorrow? Just like that? The thought spun around in Wiona’s head as she lay in bed, wide awake. She rolled over a few times, but sleep wasn’t happening. Eventually, she just gave up and sat up, hugging her knees.
She knew Conrad must have heard Shelly’s update earlier. “Donna got in Sophie’s car.” That could only mean Donna was off to team up with Sophie, and whatever they were scheming, it was definitely about her. Conrad hadn’t brought it up, which told her he already knew what was going on. As long as he was on top of things, she didn’t need to worry.
And she knew what saying yes to Conrad meant. More obstacles, more drama, more people trying to get in her way. But honestly, she wasn’t scared of any of that. It was just… this marriage license. She really wasn’t ready for that part.
Wiona fished out her phone and texted Madison. [Madison, are you awake?]
Madison replied right away with a crying emoji. [No. Wiona, I’m miserable. I fought with mom today.]
Without thinking, Wiona hit call. “Madison, are you alright? Do you want me to do anything?”
“I’m stuck in my room. She won’t let me leave. If I stay in here any longer, I swear I’ll go crazy. I just need to breathe.”
Wiona’s heart squeezed. “Hang in there, okay? I’ll figure something out. Let’s meet up tomorrow. We can talk in person.”
Madison sounded exhausted, letting out a long sigh. “Okay. If I can get out, let’s go visit the orphanage. I want to see it again.”
“Deal,” Wiona promised.
After she hung up, she realized she hadn’t mentioned her own drama at all. But next to Madison’s problems, her good news just seemed impossible to bring up. She didn’t want to sound like she was bragging. That would make her feel awful.
Morning came too soon. Wiona woke at seven thirty, threw on something comfy, and headed to the bathroom. When she opened the door, Conrad was right there, looking like he’d just stepped out of a fashion ad, every line of his suit perfect.
She caught herself staring, totally distracted by how good he looked. By the time he was right in front of her, she snapped back to reality.
