Wiona stood quietly off to the side, but she couldn’t shake the weird feeling growing in her chest. What was that supposed to mean—you’re okay? And Lisa seemed way too worked up for a normal reunion. There was definitely something Peter wasn’t telling them.

Peter clearly didn’t want to talk about himself. He just held Lisa’s hand and spoke in a soft voice. “Yes, I’m doing well. How have you been? I’m sorry for not coming back to visit all these years.”

Lisa always insisted that the kids shouldn’t come back to the orphanage, but now she patted Peter’s shoulder with a mix of hurt and blame in her voice. “You should have come back. You really should have. Do you even know how worried I was about you? I—”

Peter gently cut her off. “It’s all in the past. I’m just here today with Ms. Morgan and Maddy. They have something important to discuss with you, don’t they?”

Lisa paused, realizing Peter was dodging the subject. She nodded, a flicker of sadness in her eyes, but quickly pulled herself together and turned to Wiona.

“You must be Ms. Morgan. I’ve heard about what happened with you and Maddy.” She sighed. “Another child with a tough fate.”

Wiona gave her a polite smile. “Hello.”

If it hadn’t been for that mix-up at birth, Wiona might have might have grown up in this place. The orphanage wasn’t even half the size of the Morgan estate, but she’d heard it was always home to more than thirty kids.

She looked out at the children playing in the garden. Some looked spaced out, some eyed them with suspicion, and a few just seemed curious. There were older kids and little ones. Most faces weren’t exactly joyful, but lots of them were open and honest. Some of the kids with disabilities sat sunning themselves under the porch. Still, you could tell they were all taken care of. Their clothes were clean and no one looked sickly or underfed.

Madison took Lisa’s arm as they walked inside. “Since you know our story already, I’ll get right to the point. Wiona wants to find her birth family. Has anyone come to the orphanage over the years asking about a girl like her? Do you have any contact info for them?”

Lisa nodded. “There have been a few families looking for a girl with her background, and not many. That makes it easy to find. I knew you’d be coming, so I already got together a list of five families. Here it is.”

Wiona took the paper, her heart thumping with nerves and hope. “Thank you.” She couldn’t help but wonder if her real family was one of these names. She folded up the list and slipped it into her pocket.

She hesitated, then asked, “By the way, do you remember if anyone ever came just to see Madison? I mean, Maddy?”

Maddy was clearly Madison’s old name, and Wiona used it too, just to keep things simple.
