“So, you really don’t remember me?” Peter pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and pressed it gently into Madison’s palm. “Come on, no more tears. If anyone messes with you, I’ll handle them for you.”
Madison looked up, completely stunned. She stared at his familiar face, searching her memory, her eyes filling with disbelief as she blurted out his name. “Peter?”
Peter took off his sunglasses, revealing his face fully. In that moment, Madison realized why he’d seemed familiar when she saw him earlier, though she hadn’t done anything since he was working as Wiona’s bodyguard. Now that he’d come forward, she took a better look at him. The buzz cut was neat, his eyebrows thick, his eyes sharp and kind, features handsome and memorizing. He was tall, easily over six feet, and even under his winter jacket, the outline of his muscles stood out. He looked so different from how she remembered, yet bit by bit she could see the boy she used to know, the memories finally clicking together.
“You’re really Peter? Where have you been all these years?” Her voice was shaky, a mix of joy and shock. “Peter, it’s really you!” Unable to help herself, Madison laughed and threw her arms around him. Peter hugged her back, holding her tightly. Their embrace was strong, years of separation melting away in that moment.
He was huge, almost like a giant, and Madison was still as slim as ever. From behind, it looked like he could wrap her up completely. Wiona stood to the side, eyes wide with surprise. She hadn’t expected this at all. How did these two know each other? The world really was smaller than she thought.
When Madison finally let go, she turned to Wiona. “We grew up together in the orphanage.”
Peter’s ears turned a little red as he nodded politely at Wiona. “Yes, Ms. Morgan. I’m three years older than Maddy, so I always looked out for her. We spent years together at the orphanage, more like family than friends. Sorry for getting a little carried away just now.”
He stood up straight, looking genuinely apologetic. Madison felt a wave of pride and happiness at how reliable he seemed.
“Don’t be so stiff,” she said, waving off his apology. “Wiona’s basically my sister. Sure, people talk about us being the so-called real and fake heiresses, but we’re not enemies. Honestly, we’re more like two halves of the same person. So from now on, you’ve got to protect Wiona the way you used to look out for me, okay?”
Madison slipped her arm through Wiona’s and gave Peter a serious look. He smiled and nodded. “Got it. I promise, I’ll keep both of you safe, no matter what.”
Madison grinned at him. “By the way, didn’t your parents find you and take you back home? How did you end up back in Stonehill? And you didn’t even let us know. If we hadn’t run into you today, were you planning to just disappear?”
