“He’s been holding you in the palm of his hand since you were little, always trying to control you like you were his own daughter. I think he’s absolutely crushed right now. First, his real sister turns out to be a stranger because of some mix-up, and everything spins out of his control. Then, just when he probably talked himself into fixing things with you, you left, completely heartbroken. But honestly, he brought that on himself.”
As Madison spoke, her face stayed unreadable, her voice flat. Wiona felt a sharp ache in her chest. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t pretend it didn’t matter. You can’t just walk away from family, not when you’ve grown up together day in and day out. It’s just not that easy to let go.
But there was something else off about Madison. Wiona frowned. “Madison, did Kyle do something? Is that why you’re upset? And you said you argued with your mom last night. What happened?”
Madison didn’t say a word.
Wiona felt a wave of dread. She reached for Madison’s hand, holding on tighter. “Did your parents say something to hurt you too?”
Madison couldn’t hold it in anymore. She turned toward Wiona, buried her face in her shoulder, and broke down, sobbing.
“They… they never appreciate what they have. Why are they like this? I know they care about you, I’ve always known. When they said they had to cut you off, it was supposed to fix everything, put things back where they belonged. But deep down, none of them wanted to admit they’d raised the wrong daughter for twenty-two years. I never expected to mean more to them than you did. I never tried to compete. All I ever wanted was a little bit of warmth, some real family love… but then they said it’s my fault, that if it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t be so distant. Wiona, is it really my fault? Did I ruin this family, just by existing? Was I the one who pushed you away? Dad, Mom, Kyle… the way they look at me gets colder every day. I can’t take it anymore. I feel like I never really belonged there.
“Mom even slapped me yesterday. Just because I told her to stop trying to control things she can’t fix. Was I really wrong? And then my grandparents came to Stonehill the other day. When they found out about you, they got so mad, they tried to push my parents to marry me off to someone far away, just to get rid of me. They said if they sent me away, you’d come back to the Morgan family.
“Wiona, whether it’s the Holmes family or anyone else, why do I always feel like I’m just… an object, a puppet, a chess piece for them to move around however they want? Shouldn’t I be the daughter they lost and finally got back, someone they’d want to cherish? Why does their love feel so fake?”
The more Wiona listened, the more her heart clenched. Her brows pulled together, but all she could do was hold Madison and gently rub her back, trying to comfort her. Thinking about what Madison was going through made her chest ache even more. She understood everything Madison was feeling—disappointment, sadness, loneliness after being hurt, pain. Wiona had felt it all herself.
