Daniel sat on the sofa, his anger practically radiating from him. Alona just covered her face, looking completely defeated. Wiona shot them a quick glance, then immediately lowered her eyes, pretending she hadn’t noticed anything.

“Grandma, you wanted to see me?” Wiona asked softly.

Grandma Grace reached for Wiona’s hand, tears already brimming in her eyes. “Oh, Wiona, you’ve been through so much today. Jace actually left you behind and didn’t even notice when you were bullied. And to make things worse, he and his mother were caught having lunch with Kellen. It’s all over the news. How could they do that to you?”

Wiona knew Grandma Grace was standing up for her, but something felt off. No one had mentioned the jewelry store fiasco since she came home. Not a word, not even a hint of blame. Even now, the old lady was only scolding Jace and his mom, completely ignoring the mess Wiona had made. She figured she’d better bring it up herself, before it came back to bite her later.

“Grandma, really, I’m fine,” Wiona said quietly. “I wanted too much, and I made a mistake today because I acted on impulse. I won’t do it again, so please don’t be upset with me.”

But Grandma Grace couldn’t stand seeing Wiona so indifferent. That kind of calm just meant she’d given up. No way. She wanted to see Wiona and Jace reconnect, maybe even have Wiona reconsider the idea of leaving.

“Wiona, I’ll have Jace apologize to you,” Grandma Grace said firmly. “He started it. If he hadn’t, you wouldn’t have lost your temper at the store. I’m on your side.”

Before Wiona could say anything, Grandma Grace called Jace over, her voice sharp. “You foolish boy, do you even realize what you did? Apologize to Wiona, right now!”

Jace, still reeling from his grandmother’s scolding, clutched his head and actually muttered, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have left you today. Honey, will you forgive me?”

Wiona almost broke her cool. What was Jace up to this time? And Alona, who always jumped in to protect her son, was just watching quietly as he apologized. That had never happened before. Something was definitely off. There was no way she’d let herself be won over by a weak apology. She looked at Grandma Grace, not sure what to do.

Grandma Grace just smiled again, sweet as ever. “Come on, Wiona, he said sorry. Forgive him, okay? For my sake. Give him another chance. Jace, take Wiona upstairs and let her help you with your wound.”

“But Grandma, I’m not a doctor,” Wiona protested. “Shouldn’t we call Dr. Monroe?”

“Dr. Monroe already left for the day,” Grandma Grace replied. “Wiona, it’s really not that bad. Just clean it, put on some ointment, and a bandage. You two need to take care of each other, don’t make me worry.”
