Wiona stared at him like he’d completely lost it. She honestly couldn’t figure out what Jace was trying to pull tonight. For now, all she could do was wait and see what he was up to.
She placed her hand protectively over her stomach. “What if you bump into me or accidentally kick the babies?”
Jace’s face went stiff. That was obviously something he hadn’t considered. The babies growing inside Wiona were his and Kellen’s. Nothing could be allowed to happen to them.
Wiona could see she’d hit a nerve and ran with it. “I’m barely sleeping these days. Honestly, I think we should just keep our distance, same as before. It’s better for everyone.”
Jace rubbed his temples, looking tired. “Alright, fine. Get some rest. We’ll talk about everything tomorrow.” As he walked past her, he reached out and patted her head. “Wiona, could you stop making this so difficult? Enough happened today, and Grandma already chewed me out. Haven’t you made your point?”
He clearly wanted her to go back to being gentle and agreeable. He didn’t even mind sweet-talking her if it meant things would go back to normal.
The second he stepped out, Wiona slammed the door shut right in his face. She didn’t bother saying another word.
Jace froze, a scowl spreading across his face. He glared at the closed door, looking both angry and embarrassed. “Wiona, you’re getting way too bold, aren’t you?”
He raised his hand, about to knock again, but George appeared at the end of the hall. “Sir, your mother wants to see you.”
Finally, the hallway was quiet. Wiona grabbed her phone and texted Molly right away.
[Keep an eye on Alona and Jace for me. I need to know what they’re up to. ]
Molly had just left Grandma’s villa when her phone buzzed. The second she saw the message, she turned right around and hurried back to the main house, moving like she had a mission.
That night, the old house was finally peaceful on the surface, but underneath, things were shifting. There was a darkness moving closer to Wiona, something she couldn’t see coming.
Meanwhile, at the Sullivan family’s Hawthorne Hall, the study was dark except for a single lamp casting a weak light. Conrad stood by the huge window, staring out at the shadowy grounds. Behind him, Korey had just finished his report, looking so nervous his back was soaked with sweat.
“Mr. Sullivan, that’s the whole situation,” he managed, voice shaking. “The doctor and nurse didn’t just run off. They burned all the records from the past six months. Even the cloud backups... everything’s been erased. We were too late. I’m sorry.”
