Jace strode up beside her. “So you’re allowed to have breakfast with Grandma, but I’m not?” He looked at Wiona and added, “Wiona, she’s my grandmother too.”
Wiona just replied, “Oh,” then ignored him, glancing deliberately toward the corner of the rose garden. That spot... wasn’t that where Jace and Kellen had their secret little meeting that night? What a wasted opportunity.
Her lingering gaze didn’t go unnoticed. Jace followed her eyes, and for a second, he froze. That was the spot where he’d comforted Kellen that night. He’d never asked Wiona if she heard anything, and she never brought it up. But thinking back, her attitude had changed so much since then. She almost seemed like a completely different person.
Could she have found out something? The thought left him uneasy.
They soon reached the cozy villa where Grandma Grace lived in the back garden. The moment she spotted Wiona, her face lit up. “Wiona, are you hungry? I had the kitchen make breakfast for you. What do you wanna have?”
The table was absolutely packedThere was enough food to feed a crowd.
“Grandma, you really went all out,” Wiona said.
“My appetite’s been good lately. I can eat just about anything.” Ever since she stopped those so-called pregnancy shots, her morning sickness had faded and her appetite had bounced back. She was even starting to put some weight back on her face.
Grandma Grace smiled warmly. “As long as you and the babies are healthy, all of this is worth it.” Then she spotted Jace and her tone changed. “Oh, Jace, you’re here too? I’m glad you’re finally paying some attention to your wife. Don’t do anything foolish again, understand? You’re about to be a dad. Time to step up.”
Wiona had felt a little guilty toward Grandma Grace, since the babies she was carrying weren’t even part of the Salisbury bloodline. But every time she saw Jace and remembered everything he’d done, that guilt just vanished. He deserved all of this. Grandma would never know the truth anyway.
Jace moved in closer and helped settle Grandma Grace at the table. “Grandma, I’m really sorry. You can ask Wiona, I waited for her this morning so we could come see you together. But you only invited her and made all this delicious breakfast, so I had to invite myself.”
That finally earned him a smile. “You’ve got such a sweet tongue. Save it for your wife. And don’t say I’m playing favorites. I have an old friend who’s opening an art exhibition on the west side of town. It’s not easy to get tickets, but I managed to get two. I heard that a little artistic education is good for the babies. You should take Wiona with you.”
