Wiona looked at Summer, her expression serious. “Actually, I’ve had people investigating him all this time. But it seems like someone’s been covering for him, so I still haven’t found what I’m looking for. You and he move in the same circles, though. Maybe you’ll come across something I can’t. Just… promise me you’ll be careful.”
Summer thought of Louisa. “Louisa and I are friends. Maybe I could start with her?” It felt a little sneaky, but if Wilson really was the one who hurt her dad, then Louisa, as his daughter, wasn’t completely innocent either.
Once they agreed on their plan, the two parted ways outside the care center.
Wiona headed over to Azure Court. Cassian had told her that Wilson was hiding some sort of secret there, so for the past couple of days, she’d been hanging around the neighborhood. Sometimes she’d sit on a bench in the sun, other times she’d bring a book to the gazebo. She tried to make herself as visible as possible, hoping to run into Wilson or at least pick up some gossip.
She never saw Wilson, but she did meet a bunch of stay-at-home moms and nannies.
“How far along are you? Your belly looks huge—six months?” one of them asked.
Wiona smiled softly. “Almost five months.”
Everyone was surprised her bump was that big. “Are you having twins?”
She nodded, still smiling. “Yeah, twins.”
Her warm personality and pretty face made everyone want to talk to her. Soon, she was chatting comfortably with the group.
“Wow, another set of twins for our community! Look over there, that mom has twin girls too. Aren’t they adorable?”
Wiona glanced over and had to agree. The girls were beautiful, with round cheeks and sparkling eyes.
She found herself wishing her own babies would be girls. That would be so sweet. She wondered if Conrad wanted boys or girls more.
She couldn’t help but watch the two little girls play, her gaze drifting to the young lady watching over them. Something about her made Wiona pause.
Trying to sound casual, she asked the mom next to her, “That’s pretty cool. Do you know her? I’d love to get some tips about raising twins. I hope I’m not bothering her.”
The other mom laughed. “I wouldn’t bother trying. She’s young, but honestly, kind of standoffish. Barely talks to any of us. All I know is her last name is Smith… I think.”
Smith?
