Madison nodded. “Yeah, I remember. She was getting bullied at school back then. But we weren’t at the same school. I went to a top academy, and Mary just went to a regular public school. So I didn’t even hear about it until much later. When Lisa found out Mary was being bullied, she actually went to the school to demand an explanation. After that, Mary suddenly insisted on transferring to some private school where you could do both middle and high school together. Lisa didn’t agree at first, but Mary started a hunger strike to protest. In the end, Lisa had to talk things through with the person helping her out. Mary was really determined, so eventually they just let her go. After that, Mary never came back to the orphanage. We weren’t that close anyway, so I never tried to find her.”
Someone who supported her financially? That was Wilson, right?
It was like a light finally flickered on in Wiona’s mind. She still hadn’t figured out the whole story, but she was sure now that Mary’s disappearance from the orphanage, and everything that happened after, all had something to do with Wilson.
Just then, Wiona’s phone started ringing. It was Conrad.
“Have you had dinner?” he asked as soon as she picked up. “I’m outside Azure Court.”
He was here?
Wiona felt a flutter of happiness. With Nikolai and Drake always by her side, it made sense that Conrad would know where she was. What surprised her was that he had time to come pick her up today.
She glanced at her phone and realized it was almost eight o’clock. No wonder her stomach was growling.
She tugged Madison up. “Come on, let’s get some food.”
They walked out of the building and spotted a flashy Maserati parked by the curb.
Lewis jumped out and opened the back door for them.
Once Wiona climbed in, Lewis hurried to open the front passenger door. “Ms. Morgan, this way, please.”
Madison’s mouth twitched. She realized she was about to be the third wheel, so she slid into the front seat with zero complaints.
Luckily, Peter was in the car behind them, so Madison didn’t feel too out of place when they reached the restaurant.
They had no idea that just after they left, a shadowy figure stepped halfway out from behind a tree, watching their cars drive away. A glint of something cold flickered across his glasses.
At the dinner table, Madison lifted her champagne glass and grinned. “Mr. Sullivan, it’s so nice to finally meet you. Wiona already told me the good news, so congrats to both of you. You better treat my sister right from now on, okay? She’s the only family I’ve got.”
