Alice spoke quietly, fiddling with her fingers, her whole posture radiating hurt. When she looked up, a fat tear slipped down her cheek. There was nothing fake about it. Alice wasn’t pretending. She really was on the verge of crying.
Wiona’s heart twisted with sympathy. She reached over and gently wiped the tear away. “Hey, hey, it’s okay. No more tears, alright? Alice, I have something really important to do today. Are you sure you want to come? Aren’t you scared?”
Alice’s head shook so fast it was almost comical, her cheeks puffing out as she pouted. “I want to go. We already promised, didn’t we? I don’t care where you’re going. I’m going to be your little shadow, no matter what.”
Wiona was helpless, so she turned to Phil for help. “Can you call Conrad for me? I need to check with him first.”
Conrad had left earlier that morning. With Alice clinging to her arm, Wiona couldn’t make the call herself.
Phil dialed, explained the situation, then handed the phone to Wiona with both hands. “Mrs. Sullivan, he wants to speak with you.”
Conrad’s voice came through the speaker, calm and cool. “If she really wants to go with you, I think it’s alright. It’s time she saw a bit more of the world.”
Wiona blinked, surprised he agreed so easily. Wasn’t he worried at all? Her doubts didn’t last long.
“Take twenty security with you,” Conrad added right away.
Wiona couldn’t help but sigh. Twenty bodyguards? That was a bit much. But when she saw Alice’s hopeful eyes, she just couldn’t say no.
“Alright,” she said, giving in.
That meant Phil had to come too. Alice was so excited she nearly started jumping up and down. Peter, Nikolai, Drake, Tim, and Jim were all put on the team. Five big black cars rolled out from Hawthorne Hall. When Devin heard about the whole production, he just snorted and muttered, “Men in the Sullivan family really are hopeless romantics. Looks like Conrad’s no exception.” He followed it with a fit of coughing. If he wasn’t hurt, he wouldn’t be stuck at home. Then again, maybe it was for the best. This way, he had time to heal up before the grand finale. His moment was coming soon. He could feel it.
For Alice, this was the first time in years she’d left Hawthorne Hall. She pressed her face to the car window, eyes wide, drinking in every sight like a kid seeing the world for the first time. She kept looking around, letting out little gasps of wonder.
Wiona glanced back. “Are you scared, Alice? If you ever feel nervous, tell me right away, okay? I’ll protect you. And when we’re out, don’t let go of my hand or Phil’s, got it? Remember—”
