“Yeah, it’s the new OB doctor.”
“He’ll be handling all your prenatal checkups from now on.”
Wiona suddenly got a strong feeling in her gut. No way... She hurried over, pushed open the door, and there he was.
“Dr. Cano?” She looked at him, feeling a little awkward. Seriously, it was him? She remembered back when she’d managed to get him sent off to Antarctica, only for Conrad to haul him right back. And it was because he got caught that the whole secret about her kids came out. Conrad had probably wanted them to face off back then. But she’d run away, and then the truth came out anyway, so they never did. Thinking about it now, Wiona felt a little guilty. She’d never even asked Conrad what happened to Dr. Cano afterward. Seeing him here, alive and well, finally put her at ease.
Dr. Cano fidgeted with his coat, giving Wiona a pitiful look. “Mrs. Sullivan, could you maybe say something nice for me? Mr. Sullivan wants me to work for him, but he still doesn’t trust me. He says I made such a big mess last time and is worried I’ll mess up again. I’m not that clueless, though…”
Conrad let out a cold laugh. “You really think you can say that with a straight face? I told you not to bring that nurse. She’s so careless, but you insisted. Dr. Cano, if you don’t want this job, plenty of others do. Don’t think for a second I picked you for your skills. It’s only because you know the truth about these kids, and honestly, this whole mess ended up bringing my wife and me together, so I let it go. Stop pushing your luck.”
Wiona got it now. The nurse had mixed up something important before. Conrad didn’t blame Dr. Cano officially, but he definitely didn’t want that nurse anywhere near Hawthorne Hall. That was the problem.
She walked up and asked, “What are you doing? Are you really going to throw away this chance?”
Dr. Cano’s face turned red. “But… she and I… we’re together now. I can’t just leave her behind, can I?”
Wiona was speechless. So, all this drama had led to a new couple? She grabbed Conrad’s arm and pulled him out of the room. “Let it go. It’s not worth getting fired up over something so tiny.”
But she could tell Conrad wasn’t really upset about that. He frowned and handed her a tablet.
