Conrad stopped in his tracks, his whole body tensing up for a second. He turned to look at her, his eyes burning with so many emotions that Wiona felt her heart skip a beat. She realized right away that he’d gotten the wrong idea, so she rushed to explain. “I meant you should finish what you started last time. You’re not... thinking of something else, are you?” She gave him a little half-smile, totally deadpan.
Seriously, where was his mind going? She was pregnant, for crying out loud. There was no way she was going to do anything reckless. Even if she wanted to make him feel better, risking herself was out of the question.
Conrad coughed softly, then averted his eyes. “Wait for me. I’ll go take a shower.” He practically bolted for the bathroom.
Wiona couldn’t help but laugh quietly as she watched him hurry away, looking stiff and awkward. Had he actually blushed? It was rare to see someone with such thick skin get embarrassed. But honestly, she almost felt a little bad for him. That thought made her smile, happiness bubbling up inside her.
By the time Conrad came out of the bathroom, Wiona had already undone the buttons on her pajamas so her belly was exposed. When he came over, she pulled back the little blanket she’d been using. “Conrad, give me your hand.”
He sat down on the edge of the bed. Wiona took his hand and gently placed it on her round belly. “Can you feel it? Your babies are in there. They’re...”
Conrad’s eyes widened. Amazement lit up his face. “Wait... they’re moving?”
Wiona’s eyes softened, warmth spreading through her. “Yeah. Today, when we were at your mom’s villa, I felt them move for the first time. Isn’t it kind of magical?”
“It really is,” Conrad said quietly. “It’s incredible. There are two little lives inside you. And they’re connected to me, too.”
He looked overwhelmed for a second, then bent down and pressed a gentle kiss to her stomach. “You two behave in there, okay? Don’t make things too hard for your mom. If you do, I’m gonna have a talk with you when you come out.” He poked her belly lightly with his finger.
Wiona giggled. “Be gentle.” Then she handed him the jar of stretch mark cream. “Come on, get to work.”
She was already more than twenty weeks pregnant, almost without realizing it. She’d been planning to go for a check-up tomorrow, but Conrad had already taken care of everything. “Don’t worry, I’ve got it all arranged. Starting tomorrow, we’ll have a professional OB on standby at the house. You can get a check-up every day if you want.”
Wiona thought about how much of a hassle it was to go to the hospital, even if it was the Sullivan family’s own private clinic. Since Conrad had the resources, she decided to just let him take care of it. “Alright. Then maybe tomorrow we can find out the babies’ genders? I looked it up, and you can see clearly at twenty weeks.”
Conrad was still gently rubbing the cream onto her belly, totally focused on not pressing too hard. When he heard her suggestion, though, a little nervousness crept into his eyes. “I’m not sure I’m ready to meet them just yet. But knowing if they’re boys or girls ahead of time... that sounds pretty nice.”
