Conrad didn’t argue. He just said, “I don’t know. Let’s finish lunch first. We should fill our stomachs.”
After they finished, Conrad went with Wiona to Annette’s private villa. As soon as they walked in, Annette paused in surprise, staring at Conrad.
“You’re here too?”
Not just Conrad, but Alice had come along as well. She was skipping around the garden, her curiosity still endless. If there was anything new or unfamiliar, she had to touch or poke. Phil trailed after her at a relaxed pace, keeping an eye on her. Whenever Alice created chaos, he’d just call someone over to clean it up, not even trying to stop her from making the same mistake next time.
Wiona couldn’t help but find it interesting. Phil was actually more attentive to Alice than Libby ever was.
Inside, Annette let out a cold little laugh. “I’ve lived here for almost ten years. You never bothered to set foot in this place before, so why today?”
She saw through Conrad but didn’t call him out directly, just kept herself busy. That’s when Wiona noticed the living room was packed with neatly stacked boxes.
“Are you moving?” she asked, curiosity plain in her voice.
“I’m selling the house,” Annette replied. “There’s a lot here I want to let go of... but some things are too precious for me to part with. I wanted you to help me decide. If I’d known he was coming with you, I wouldn’t have asked you over.”
It was obvious Annette wasn’t happy that Conrad had come along. She could feel her son’s distance and suspicion, and it hurt.
Conrad, though, didn’t seem bothered at all. He just looked confused. “Selling the house? Mom, what’s going on? Has the Sullivan family fallen so low that we need to start selling property?”
Annette’s anger spiked. She started fussing with the boxes, her irritation clear. “What else do you expect me to do? Don’t tell me you seriously have no clue what’s been happening with the Clements family lately. After the way you treated your uncle and his family at the banquet, all our relatives are avoiding them. Sophie went home and got talked about behind her back. She may act tough, but she’s still just a girl. Then word got out, and now everyone knows your uncle upset you. He’s in the hospital from the stress, and a few of the Clements family’s projects have stalled. I know you won’t back down, and I know you’ll keep siding with your wife, even if it means turning your back on the Clements. But Conrad, can’t you let it go just this once, for my sake?”
Conrad didn’t even address her plea. He just looked at her, his voice cool. “So what does that have to do with you selling the house? If the Clements family is so desperate they need you to sell your house to bail them out, they might as well just file for bankruptcy.”
