Nicholas wore his long, silver-streaked hair in a low ponytail and his usual suit. He was almost seventy, but he carried himself with the energy of someone much younger. There was something about the way he moved, a certain calm and elegance, that made it obvious he was a true master in his field.

He took a good look at Wiona, a hint of surprise in his eyes. “Wiona, it’s been ages. You look… different. I saw online that you smashed up a jewelry store. And the news says you’re pregnant?”

“That’s right, Uncle Nicholas,” Wiona replied, her voice soft. “I guess I let you down.”

Nicholas shook his head gently. “Life was never meant to go in one straight line. There’s never just one right path. I’m just sorry you didn’t become the person we always hoped you’d be.”

Wiona lowered her eyes. She felt that regret too, deep down.

They chatted for a while before Wiona finally mentioned the painting. “How did my painting end up with you?”

Nicholas smiled a little. “Your mentor gave it to me. She said it was too beautiful to stay hidden, that people should remember there was once a genius called W. She had it shipped over so it could shine at the exhibition. Did you know someone’s already offered to buy it? A million. I didn’t accept. It’s your painting, and I’d never sell it without your say-so.”

Wiona’s cheeks burned with shame. “I’ve let her down so badly. I can’t believe she’d still help me by bringing my painting back.”
