Jace never expected that the person Nicholas was meeting would be Wiona. It threw him off completely. Wiona stood there, quiet and unreadable. Nicholas didn’t bother to explain either.
From the start, Wiona had always kept things close to her chest. Ever since her talent started shining in middle school and she met all these old artists, she’d kept her secret from everyone around her. She said the Morgans were dead set against her painting. She also wanted a little world of her own. The older artists, especially Bronwen, worried they’d lose her. Bronwen even tried to sound out Wiona’s parents behind the scenes, but their response was harsh. The Morgans didn’t want their daughter to become an artist. What they wanted was a well-bred, respectable heiress, someone who could add value to the family name. An artist, even a famous one, would eventually fly away and out of their reach.
Bronwen was disappointed in the Morgans, but she couldn’t stand the thought of Wiona’s talent fading away. So she helped Wiona keep everything under wraps. They all did. Over the years, they’d done such a good job that no one except a handful of insiders had any clue that the Morgan family’s fake heiress was actually the brilliant, sought-after painter known as W. Even when people tried to dig for answers, the replies were vague, painting a picture of someone nothing like the real Wiona. After a while, no one would have ever guessed W and Wiona were the same person.
Jace, of course, had no idea.
“So, you used Grandma’s connections to get a meeting with Nicholas?” he guessed, since it was the only thing that made sense. He walked over and, without thinking, pulled Wiona to his side by her arm. Then he turned to Nicholas. “Mr. Nicholas, it’s good to meet you. I’m Jace Salisbury, the eldest grandson of the Salisbury family. I apologize if my wife bothered you by coming here under my grandmother’s name. I hope she didn’t cause any trouble.”
Nicholas glanced at Wiona, who wasn’t saying anything, and just smiled. “It’s all right. I do have a long-standing friendship with your grandparents. Since you’re here and wanted to see me, come in.”
Nicholas turned and headed into the café.
Wiona shook off Jace’s hand and stepped away. She looked over at Kellen and Julian, who’d followed them in. “Since you’ve got things to discuss with Nicholas, I’ll head out.”
Jace stepped in her way. “Wiona, are you done with this yet? Just because I forgot about our plans today, you’re going to keep sulking?” He pressed his fingers to his forehead, sounding worn out. “You’re just making things harder for me. Can’t you be reasonable, like before? You used to know how to behave.”
