“Kellen can use the room on the second floor. That should put Jace at ease.”

Alona nearly lost it. If Wiona was going to be this reasonable, why not just do it from the start? Did she really need to drag the whole family into chaos before she felt satisfied?

Jace, though, saw things differently. He glanced down at Wiona, feeling all kinds of tangled up inside. If he hadn’t gone into that toxic room himself, he probably would’ve thought she was just being dramatic. But his throat still burned, and whether she did this on purpose or not, tonight made him realize one thing: everything Wiona did was for the baby she was carrying.

She really was a good mom. At least, she believed the child was hers.

But then there was the way he’d just acted with Kellen. Did it not bother her at all?

Watching Wiona’s calm, almost indifferent face, Jace couldn’t help but sneer to himself. Let’s see how long you can keep up this act, Wiona.

Daniel gave Wiona a long, searching look, like he knew he’d been played tonight. He didn’t seem angry, though. His voice was cold as he tossed out, “Whatever you want.” Then he headed upstairs.

Everyone in the room breathed a sigh of relief. The tension finally broke, leaving everyone drained.

Wiona turned to George. “Could you all help me move my things to the guest room on the first floor? Thanks so much.”

George got right to it. With Molly giving directions, all of Wiona’s belongings were soon carried into the biggest guest room downstairs.

Looking at her now-empty vanity, Wiona paused, like she’d just remembered something. “Oh, by the way… The jewelry that got damaged at the store a while back has been repaired and delivered. It’s still in my old room, taking up space Kellen could use. George, could you help me bring that down too? Sorry for the extra trouble.”

“No trouble at all, ma’am. I’ll take care of it right away,” George replied.

Under Kellen’s shocked stare, George, Molly, and the rest of the staff headed back up to Wiona’s old bedroom. Molly made sure not even a cup was left behind. Everything Wiona had ever used was packed up and moved out, down to the last item.

Jace didn’t say a word, but Kellen was fuming. What was Wiona trying to say? Kellen was just staying a few days. Did Wiona really think she’d steal her stuff? Sure, she’d tried on a necklace or two earlier, but that didn’t mean she was desperate.

Kellen felt embarrassed and insulted, but she couldn’t exactly lash out. Instead, she turned to Jace with a pitiful look. “Jace, does Wiona think something weird is going on? I’m not planning to stay in that room forever. I’ll give it back to her. The way she moved all her things out… it’s like she’s never coming back.”

Jace just said, “Don’t worry about her.” For some reason, his chest felt tight. He tried to comfort Kellen, but he couldn’t bring himself to stay in her room much longer.

As he was about to leave, Kellen suddenly hugged him around the waist.

“Jace, don’t you want to?” she whispered. “It’s just the two of us on this floor now. Everyone thinks you’re just here to take care of me. No one will suspect a thing.”

To her surprise, Jace pushed her away.

“Kellen, we’re at home,” he said, his voice firm. “Don’t make a scene.”
