Wiona’s heart gave a sharp, nervous jolt.

Why did he have to show up now, of all times?

She kept her mouth shut, not wanting to make things any messier than they already were.

Jace had found his way into the hedge maze too. She could hear him, wandering through the twists and turns, calling her name.

“Wiona?”

Conrad’s eyes narrowed when she didn’t answer. He seemed to pick up on what she was doing. She didn’t want her husband to find her. A look of understanding flashed across his face, and then he started walking straight toward her.

His voice dropped to an almost inaudible rumble. “Ms. Morgan, your husband’s looking for you. Aren’t you going to answer?”

He stepped even closer. “Or maybe you don’t want him to see you here, with a strange man?”

Wiona matched every one of Conrad’s steps forward with a step back.

“That’s really not your business, Mr. Sullivan.”

“I just want to avoid unnecessary drama. I’m guessing you feel the same.”

Conrad stopped, a hint of a smirk curving his lips. “Drama, huh?”

“What counts as drama to you?”

He leaned in, teasing. “Should we see how your husband reacts if he finds you here?”

Before Wiona could answer, footsteps grew louder, closing in.

“Who’s there?”

Jace was almost on top of them. He’d heard voices.

Wiona’s pulse shot up. Without even thinking, she darted forward, reached up, and slapped her hand over Conrad’s mouth.

Her eyes were wide, panic rising in her chest.

She looked up and met Conrad’s dark, unreadable gaze. For a moment, her expression softened, silently asking him for help.

Suddenly, Jace’s voice came, much closer this time.

“Wiona, is that you?”

Wiona froze, every muscle tense. She twisted her head, searching the maze, but she didn’t see Jace anywhere. The voice had come from right behind them.

That meant Jace was just on the other side of the hedge wall. The hedge was tall and thick with thorns. He couldn’t see them, but if he got suspicious, it would be easy for him to come around to their side.

Wiona felt her nerves stretch so tight she could barely breathe.

Conrad moved unexpectedly. He took her cold hand from his mouth with a gentle but firm grip. He leaned down, his presence suddenly overwhelming.

There was a playful look in his eyes as he bent close to her ear, his words just a whisper. “So, Ms. Morgan, have you made up your mind?”

His warm breath sent a shiver down her spine.
