Jace listened as the others gossiped about Wiona, not bothering to stop them. He just stared at her back as she walked away, a knot of worry twisting in his chest. Why hadn’t she told him she’d be here tonight? That wasn’t like her at all.
He only snapped back when Kellen squeezed his palm and shot him a look that said, seriously? Get your head back in the game. Jace blinked, forcing a smile, and joined in as their group went back to laughing and welcoming guests.
A little farther away, Conrad had watched the whole thing unfold. He let out a cold laugh. “What an idiot.”
Korey blinked, confused. Since when did Mr. Sullivan call people names?
“Who do you mean, sir?” Korey asked quietly. Was he talking about Mrs. Salisbury? She’d just been insulted in front of everyone and still managed to look totally unfazed. You had to admire that kind of composure.
Conrad just shook his head, eyes full of disdain. “The CEO of Salisbury Corporation. Not only is he blind, but his brain doesn’t work either.”
Oh. So he meant Mr. Salisbury. Korey kept his mouth shut. It was pretty obvious now. Mr. Sullivan really didn’t like that guy.
Conrad gave a small shake of his head, then turned on his heel and walked into the private dining room next door. He had a dinner tonight that actually mattered, so he wasn’t about to waste any more time out there.
“Mr. Bishop, sorry to keep you waiting.”
Mr. Bishop was busy entertaining his little grandson, who he’d brought along for the evening. The boy had been drawing quietly, but the second he spotted Conrad, his eyes went wide, and he dove straight into his grandfather’s arms like he’d seen a ghost.
Conrad froze, a bit thrown. Mr. Bishop just laughed. “This little guy came with me to visit his great aunt at the sanatorium the other day, but he ended up sneaking off to the garden to draw.”
“He came back and said he’d met a scary monster who chased away his pretty lady.”
Mr. Bishop looked at Conrad with twinkling eyes. “You were at the sanatorium that day, weren’t you? Was that you?”
Conrad looked at the kid’s face and suddenly realized he’d seen him before, sitting with Wiona over tea that afternoon. He cleared his throat, feeling strangely embarrassed. “That was me. I’m sorry, I was out of line that day. I owe you an apology.”
