Wiona’s voice came out rough and low. “There was an accident on the overpass. I’m okay, really.”

“My car’s totaled and there’s no way I can get a cab right now. Could you give me a lift?”

She glanced at the black sedan parked nearby. Both cars looked pretty average, just regular domestic models, but somehow, in the middle of this unpredictable night, they seemed strangely intimidating. There was something about them that made you want to stay away, like they were trouble you didn’t want.

Wiona didn’t care who these people were or what their connection to Remy was. Right now, all she wanted was to get to the Salisbury family estate as fast as possible.

Remy’s expression flickered with uncertainty. She shot a nervous glance at the shadowy figure sitting in the back of the car.

Suddenly, the window slid down.

The driver, Korey, leaned out with a polite smile. “Dr. Holmes, the boss says you should get in. You can take care of your friend’s injury on the way.”

Remy seemed relieved, remembering that a car like this would definitely have a first aid kit. She quickly ushered Wiona inside.

The moment Wiona climbed in, she noticed him. The guy was dressed head to toe in black, with a sharp, modern haircut. Even at night, he wore sunglasses, which made him seem cold and completely unapproachable. It was like he had a wall up, daring anyone to try and get close.

That was all Wiona really saw of him.

Remy looked tense as she spoke. “Thank you for letting us ride with you, sir. Sorry for the trouble.”

She led Wiona to the back, and Wiona nodded politely to the man, pressing her lips together as she slid into her seat.

Remy immediately checked Wiona’s injury. There was a nasty gash on her forehead.

“Mrs. Salisbury, you should really go to the hospital and get stitches.”

“It can wait,” Wiona replied, her tone steady.

Remy understood right away. Mrs. Salisbury was planning to walk into the family estate just like this, wounded and all.
