If it wasn’t just someone with the same name... Wiona glanced up, but in the darkness, all she could make out was a shadow.
She had never really seen his face.
Her hands were shaking so badly that she tucked them behind her back. Her heart was pounding, wild and loud, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that something big was about to happen. It was like her secret might spill out at any second, and all she wanted was to get away.
“Thank you.” Her voice was barely above a whisper as she turned and slipped into the night.
At the main gate, Wiona paused and looked back at the Salisbury family estate. Lights blazed from every window, and the sound of music floated over the lawn.
She took a deep breath, forced herself to steady her nerves, and led Remy toward the garden.
“Mrs. Salisbury, you’re back?”
“Oh no, you’re hurt!”
“Someone call—”
Wiona shook her head. “It’s okay. I’ll go in myself.”
Once she and Remy had disappeared, Korey finally turned to the man sitting in the back of the car, all dressed in black.
“Mr. Sullivan, are you worried Remy won’t find anything tonight? Is that why you left your contact information, just in case?”
Conrad’s tone was quiet but firm. “Someone in the Salisbury family is definitely covering something up.
“A year ago, I sent someone to ask Daniel. He really didn’t know anything at all.
“But there’s no way the Salisburys don’t know the truth.”
Conrad had been searching for W for three years.
The trail had finally led him here, to the Salisburys.
If Remy couldn’t uncover anything tonight, Conrad was ready to step in himself.
He thought back to the face he had just glimpsed. Even battered as she was, her beauty was striking, her eyes clear and bright.
“She’s got some spirit.” Conrad muttered.
Korey glanced over. “Did you say something?”
Before he could answer, Conrad’s phone rang.
