Wiona knocked the bowl away with a sharp flick of her hand just as it reached her lips.
“I’m not drinking that!” she yelled, glaring at Alona behind Jace. Ever since her real identity had come out, Wiona knew she’d been nothing but a thorn in her mother-in-law’s side. Alona had been waiting for a reason to kick her out of the Salisbury family, and after Grandma Grace handed her the family heirloom, every look from Alona was colder, meaner, full of resentment and calculation. The poisonous room, the way she watched Wiona and Kellen tear each other apart… Alona was always involved, always lurking in the background.
Wiona didn’t believe for a second that Alona wanted her grandchild to be born safe. She’d never trust anything the woman gave her.
“You want to hurt my babies. Maybe Jace is gullible enough to trust you, but I’m not,” Wiona snapped.
Her words hit Alona hard. Alona’s face twisted with anger as she stared at the mess on the floor. “Wiona, don’t be so ungrateful. I’m the babies’ grandmother. Why would I ever harm them? Sonia, get another bowl. Now.”
Sonia, the housekeeper, rushed off and came back quickly, cradling another bowl of that dark, bitter liquid.
Jace looked uncertain, but Alona pointed at Wiona, her voice sharp. “Are you just going to let her run again? After everything she’s done to Kellen and Bianca, she deserves a little punishment. This won’t hurt the babies. What are you waiting for? Jace, you need to show your wife who’s in charge. Look at the mess she’s made.”
Jace’s jaw clenched. He backed Wiona into the corner, gripping her chin hard, taking the bowl from Alona.
“Stop fighting. Just listen for once,” he said quietly. “Do this, and you’ll still be my good wife. Don’t run. Be the couple we used to be. Prove to Grandma you’ve changed. Everything will be fine if you just cooperate. You can do that, right?”
He pressed the bowl to her lips. The bitter medicine flooded her mouth. Wiona fought him, kicking, pushing, scratching, but Jace didn’t budge. Alona grabbed her arms, holding her still.
“Drink it!” Alona hissed, forcing the bowl against Wiona’s mouth.
Half the medicine spilled down her shirt, but the other half went down her throat. The pressure split her lip, and she felt blood mixing with the awful taste as she choked it down.
When Jace let her go, Wiona collapsed onto the floor. She felt completely drained. Jace crouched beside her, his voice suddenly soft, almost gentle. “Wiona, it’s over now. Trust me, the medicine isn’t going to hurt you…”
