“I really didn’t give you enough credit before.”
“You just keep surprising me, you know that?”
He was gritting his teeth, but underneath the anger something else was starting to bubble up. It was almost thrilling, like life had suddenly become a lot more interesting.
From the security cameras, Jace saw Wiona slip out the front door and into the garden. The place was huge and the night was pitch black, with rain pouring down. Trying to find someone out there would be nearly impossible.
He grabbed an umbrella, switched on a flashlight, and started walking slowly through the garden, calling out as he searched.
“Wiona?”
“You’re going to get sick if you stay out in this rain.”
“If you won’t think about yourself, at least think about the kids.”
“You always wanted to be a mom, right? You wanted to have our children.”
“Just come out. I’m not mad about what happened tonight.”
“I know I scared you. I was too impatient. If you just come out now, I’ll give you whatever you want.”
“Are you really not coming out?”
He shined his flashlight into every corner, but Wiona was nowhere to be found.
What Jace didn’t know was that Wiona had already crawled through some bushes, ducked into a blind spot in the cameras, and slipped into the kitchen. She was hiding in a corner, digging around in the fridge and shoving food into her mouth as fast as she could, desperate to regain her strength.
She was still chewing when she heard Alona’s voice from the living room. “Sonia, go make some ginger tea in the kitchen.”
The floor was still wet and muddy from Wiona’s entrance. If anyone walked in, they’d see immediately that something was off. Wiona froze, pressing herself into the shadows, barely daring to breathe.
Sonia was right at the door. Wiona was out of places to hide.
Then the doorbell started ringing, loud and insistent, breaking the tension. Sonia turned around and went to answer it.
Wiona seized her chance, sneaking out of the kitchen as fast as she could. She grabbed a waterproof apron on her way out, tying it over her head to disguise herself. From her new hiding spot, she could see Sonia opening the main door.
“Who are you?”
Kellen burst in, shoving Sonia aside so hard she stumbled and fell.
