The door crashed open, banging against the wall. Three sets of footsteps tumbled into the room, their movements frantic and messy. Wiona stayed perfectly still inside the closet, barely breathing.
She was soaked, but she’d been careful. She’d walked around the room, leaving wet marks in every corner, making sure the trail didn’t point straight to the closet. She’d even ripped her own jacket and draped it by the window, as if she’d climbed out and gotten snagged on the way. Hopefully, these little tricks would throw them off, at least long enough for her to come up with her next move.
It didn’t take long. Sonia’s voice rang out by the window, sharp and alarmed. “This is Mrs. Salisbury’s coat!”
Alona’s response was harsh. “Did that bitch climb out the window again?”
But outside, there was nothing. No sign of Wiona clinging to the wall.
Alona narrowed her eyes, trying to reason it out. “You think she lured us up here, just to distract us, so she could slip out again?”
“No,” Jace said quietly, but his voice carried a weight that made both women fall silent. “She’s too smart for something that obvious.”
He paused, mind racing. He’d just heard her voice in this room. Who had she been talking to?
He glanced at the nightstand and realized his phone was gone. His face darkened. “Give me your phone,” he ordered Alona.
He dialed his own number, waiting for a ringtone. Nothing. The room was silent.
Jace started searching, tearing through the room, getting closer and closer to the closet. Just as he reached for the door, Sonia shouted from outside. “Look, there’s a light in the garden! Is that Mr. Salisbury’s phone?”
Sonia dashed downstairs and out into the rain. A moment later, she came back, waving the phone over her head. “Ma’am, it’s really his phone!”
How did his phone get out there? Did Wiona grab it and drop it while running?
Alona was starting to lose it. She couldn’t figure out what Wiona was playing at. She was exhausted, her nerves frayed and her anger burning hot. How could Wiona have disappeared so fast if she’d really gone out the window?
The rain pounded on the roof, making it hard to hear. Alona grabbed her phone and called Sonia. “Search the garden. Every flowerbed, every corner. Don’t miss a single spot. I want her found, no matter what.”
“I don’t care if she’s hurt or not. She should be bleeding by now anyway. Even if she got away, she won’t make it far.”
The words spilled out before Alona remembered that Jace was standing right there. She stopped, biting her lip.
But he’d heard everything.
“Mom, what do you mean, ‘she should be bleeding’? What are you talking about?”
Jace stared at her, suspicion in his eyes, taking a step forward.
Alona scrambled to cover up. “I just meant… she’s been under a lot of stress tonight. I’m worried she could lose the baby.”
