Everyone was finally here. This was the moment she had been waiting for.
Wiona slipped quietly around the corner, heart pounding. All the risk she’d taken tonight, sneaking out, climbing the wall, it all came down to this. She needed to find a room with the light on. That was her real goal. That was why she’d made so much noise dragging the nightstand earlier, just to lure everyone out of their rooms. It didn’t matter whose room she ended up in, Jace’s or Alona’s. What mattered was that this was her only shot at getting out.
She moved toward the glow of a lamp, fingers trembling as she tried the window. Locked, of course.
No time to waste. She pulled out the metal deer antler she’d wrapped in cloth and hidden up her sleeve. Clutching the windowsill with one hand, she raised the antler and slammed it into the glass. The first hit left a web of cracks. The second made the whole pane shudder, fragments threatening to break free. On the third swing, she used every ounce of strength she had left. The glass shattered with a deafening crash. She ducked back, just in time to avoid the shards.
“What is she doing?”
“Wiona, have you lost your mind?”
Down below, Alona’s voice was shrill, but Wiona barely heard her. She was already climbing through the broken window into the room.
Alona and Sonia caught on fast. They bolted for the stairs. “Hurry! She’s going to try to get out! Stop her!”
Jace heard the chaos and froze for half a second. Then he realized he’d been tricked again. He clenched his jaw, yelling into the storm, “Wiona, I swear, you’re going to regret this!”
He jumped down, rain soaking his hair and face. All three of them raced back into the house, thundering up to the third floor.
But Wiona was already inside. She barely paused to breathe, pulling out the wad of paper she’d tucked into her bra earlier. She jammed it deep into the lock, just as Alona and Sonia reached the landing. Then she slammed the door shut and locked it, twisting the deadbolt twice for good measure.
The pounding started immediately. The door rattled on its hinges.
“Wiona, what are you doing? Open the door!”
“Wiona! Wiona!”
For a moment, she let herself breathe. She heard Alona barking orders. “Sonia, go find the key. Now.”
Sonia’s footsteps faded. Jace’s heavy tread replaced them.
