**Title: Raindrops Kissing Silent Streets – by Aadi Sharma**
**Chapter 7**
Kayla’s words dripped with an unmistakable air of superiority, each syllable laced with a smugness that was palpable. In the hushed corners of the office, whispers circulated like wildfire—everyone was aware that Adam had chosen only his new personal assistant to accompany him on his latest business venture. This was no mere friendly exchange; it was a calculated provocation.
Renee, maintaining a calm demeanor, allowed a smirk to dance across her lips. “Personal assistant? You mean the kind who sheds her clothes and slips right into bed with him?” The words rolled off her tongue with an effortless ease, as though she were discussing the weather rather than a deeply personal betrayal.
Kayla’s expression faltered for a moment, her smile freezing in place. A dark shadow flickered in her eyes as she hissed, “You—”
Yet, she quickly regained her composure, leaning in closer, her voice dripping with insincere sweetness. “Stop pretending you’re unaffected. If you genuinely didn’t care about Adam, you wouldn’t have that little injury on your forehead. What was it? A pathetic attempt to look vulnerable and win his sympathy?”
With a calculated step forward, Kayla lowered her voice to a conspiratorial whisper, her breath brushing against Renee’s ear. “But here’s the truth: Adam doesn’t love you. I spent the entire week with him on that trip. You should have seen him; he was a powerhouse, making deals left and right. God, he looked so good. But honestly? He looked even better when he was on top of me.”
A wicked grin spread across Kayla’s face, her eyes gleaming with malicious delight as their faces hovered mere inches apart. In an instant, her expression shifted as her hand “slipped,” sending the steaming cup of tea crashing onto Renee’s hand.
Renee gasped, the scalding liquid igniting her skin, and instinctively shoved Kayla away. “Kayla!”
Kayla stumbled back, her balance faltering dramatically, and she crashed to the floor, the remnants of the hot tea splattering onto her own hand.
A loud wail erupted from her lips. “It hurts! Oh my God, it burns!”
Tears cascaded down her cheeks as she clutched her reddened hand, her sobs echoing through the hallway. “Ms. Whitley, how could you push me? I was just following orders. Adam asked me to accompany him on that trip.”
Just then, Adam’s furious voice sliced through the chaos. “Renee, stop it right now!”
Before she could even turn her head, he stormed over and roughly shoved her aside, rushing to Kayla’s side.
“Kayla, are you okay?” he asked, enveloping her in his arms, concern etched across his face.
Through her tears, Kayla shook her head, her voice trembling as she lifted her burned hand. “Please don’t blame Ms. Whitley. She didn’t mean it… Adam, please don’t be angry with her.”
The theatrics were almost laughable, a performance so exaggerated that it reeked of false innocence and crocodile tears.
Yet, Adam was oblivious to the charade. His attention was solely focused on Kayla, his face flushed with rage as he turned on Renee. “When did you become so vicious? Do you even understand how dangerous hot water can be? That could leave a scar for life!”
Renee stood frozen, the resignation letter clutched tightly in her burned hand. Although her fingers trembled from the sting, the pain felt distant, overshadowed by the storm brewing in front of her.
All she could see was Adam, his voice booming like thunder, a stark contrast to the gentle man who once held her with such tenderness. In that moment, he appeared more like a raging beast than the man who had once adored her.
A fleeting thought crossed her mind—when had she lost that version of him? When had she lost the man who once loved her as if she were the center of his universe?
Fatigue washed over her, a bone-deep weariness that drained her of the will to defend herself.
She gazed at him, her eyes shifting from shock to disappointment and finally settling into a quiet despair, leaving only an icy calm in their wake.
“I’m here to resign,” she declared, her voice soft and steady, devoid of any emotion.
But Adam was deaf to her words, his attention locked on Kayla’s burn, too consumed by anger to acknowledge anything else. He couldn’t comprehend how the woman he once loved could exhibit such cruelty.
“You don’t need to resign,” he snapped, his tone sharp. “A senior executive attacking another employee like this? My assistant will be sending out a company-wide notice soon. You’re fired.”
His eyes blazed with fury as he delivered the words, each one cutting like a knife.
