Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 191

Emmy’s fingers tightened around her phone, her grip so tight her knuckles turned white.

She knew Dean better than anyone.

He was obsessive—dangerously so. In high school, a classmate accidentally bumped into her in the cafeteria and she ended up with a scraped knee. Dean found the guy, tied him up, and left him without food for three days. In college, some street punk whistled at her. Dean had him beaten within an inch of his life and pinned a charge on him that got him thrown straight into jail.

There were countless stories like this over the years.

Now, Evelina was the one Dean adored above all else.

And James had crossed that line with Evelina.

Emmy didn’t even want to think about what Dean might do. The thought alone gave her chills.

She opened her chat with James and fired off a message right away.

Make sure you stay safe these days. Try not to go anywhere alone.

James replied almost instantly.

Okay.

No questions, no hesitation.

That simple trust, so absolute, settled something shaky inside her.

She had just finished lunch when Steve’s message popped up on her screen.

Sis-in-law, the house is handled. Mrs. White and her daughter will be gone in a week. If they won’t leave, I’ll get some guys and move them out myself!

For the first time that day, Emmy smiled.

But the next message wiped that smile right off her face. It was from her father.

Emmy, you’re still new to all this. Don’t push things too far. Karma has a way of coming back.

Karma?

Emmy let out a bitter laugh. Her fingers flew across the screen.

Isn’t it you who’s facing karma now, Father?

She could practically picture Cooper’s polite mask cracking as he read her message, probably so angry he’d want to smash his phone.

By evening, the hospital didn’t seem quite so cold. There was a new kind of warmth in the air.

Her mother’s cheeks were looking rosier every day, and when the doctor said, “She should wake up soon—maybe in a few days,” Emmy finally felt like she could breathe again.

Dr. Hall, James cut her off, his tone sharp, you’re here for your patients. My marriage isn’t your concern.

With that, he turned and strode toward the elevators.

Lorelei stood there, stunned.

James—the same guy who’d never tolerated any disloyalty—was letting his wife get away with this?

At the elevator, James took Emmy’s hand again, holding on so tight it was like he was afraid she might slip away.

Let’s go, he said, his voice low and rough.

Emmy didn’t ask what had happened. She just let him pull her into the elevator.

On the way home, Emmy felt exhaustion hit her all at once. She leaned against the window, drifting off as the city lights blurred by.

Then, out of nowhere, the screech of brakes ripped through the night.

The car jerked, throwing her forward and snapping her awake in an instant.

What happened?
