A swarm of deep green helicopters tore across the sky, heading south with a roar that shook the streets below. Shadows swept over the city, and people stopped to stare, voices buzzing with nervous energy.
“What the hell is going on? Is there a war or something?”
“I heard the military base on the outskirts got attacked last night. Mercenaries from overseas, they say. A lot of people didn’t make it.”
Emmy caught bits and pieces of the gossip as she made her way to the hospital, but she didn’t think much of it. Even though James used to be in special forces, it never crossed her mind to connect him to whatever disaster everyone was whispering about.
She drove into the hospital parking lot and had barely put her car in park when a car came screeching in beside her. Claudia jumped out, panic written all over her face, and rushed straight into the hospital.
Emmy narrowed her eyes. Something about Claudia’s whole vibe was seriously off.
She quickly followed, slipping into a different elevator to avoid being noticed. She kept her distance, trailing Claudia through the hallways until they reached Dean and Evelina’s room.
Claudia went in and slammed the door. Emmy crept up, pressing her ear gently against the wood.
Inside, Evelina’s voice was sharp with worry. “Mom! Did you get James? Did you catch him?”
Claudia’s reply was ice-cold and aimed straight at Dean. “Who is James, really? What’s his real identity?”
Dean sounded as arrogant as ever. “He’s just a firefighter. What else could he possibly be?”
Claudia’s tone could’ve frozen the blood in anyone’s veins. “A firefighter? Mr. Sparrow, you have no idea. You’re seriously underestimating him.”
“My friend’s mercenary team started out by sending their two best men to take care of him. Easy job, right? Except both of them ended up in the hospital. James fights harder than people who’ve spent their whole lives risking death.”
“My friend had to step in personally. They set a perfect trap with a forest fire, just waiting for him to walk right in. But James knew the area like the back of his hand. He led his team over the ridge and straight into the military base.”
“And then? The mercenaries got ambushed. The army surrounded them. They fought all night, and almost none of them made it out. Even their safe house in the capital was wiped out.”
Emmy felt her whole body go numb. Just hearing it, she could picture exactly how much danger James had been in. One thought hammered through her mind.
She glared at Dean, her voice sharp and cold. “I don’t care how powerful he is. Dean, do something. James has to die, or I’ll never be able to face my friend again.”
Suddenly, a loud crash exploded at the door.
Emmy burst in, her calm eyes blazing with fury. No one even saw where she grabbed the stool, but she was already charging at Claudia.
Claudia barely had time to react before the stool came crashing down on her head.
She screamed and collapsed to the floor.
Dean and Evelina just stood there, stunned into silence. Who could have guessed Emmy would storm in and attack like that?
By the time they snapped out of it, Emmy was already raising the stool again, aiming for a second blow.
