As soon as Abriella walked into the hospital room, she started unloading everything on James, barely stopping to breathe.
“…That’s what happened! Her deadbeat dad shoved her. She’s got a bruise right on her chest, the size of a fist!”
Emmy gave a tired little smile, trying to calm things down. “I’m really okay. Seriously, don’t worry.”
James didn’t answer. His expression was all hard edges as he grabbed Emmy’s wrist and pulled her toward the hallway.
“Where are we going?” Emmy asked, surprised.
“To find a doctor.”
Of course, just her luck, every doctor on shift tonight was a man.
And her injury? Yeah, not exactly in the most convenient place to show a stranger.
James’s jaw tightened as he turned her into the nearest treatment room, closing the door behind them with a quiet click.
He looked down at her, his voice firm. “Unbutton your shirt. Let me see.”
Emmy’s hands flew to her chest, her cheeks flushed. “I told you, I’m fine!”
James just stared at her with those deep, dark eyes, like he could see right through her.
That look was too much. Emmy felt herself caving.
She muttered, “Okay… but just for a second, alright?”
Her hands shook as she fumbled open the first button, then the second.
She tugged the collar aside, just long enough for him to see, then hurried to close it again, her heart racing.
But even that split second was enough. James took in everything.
A bruise, deep purple and angry, about the size of a baby’s fist, stood out starkly against her pale skin, right at the curve of her chest.
There was no hiding how hard she’d been hit.
“Wait here.”
His eyes were dark and stormy as he left her with those words, disappearing out the door.
Left alone on the bed, Emmy pulled out her phone, just to have something to do.
#SkylineSystemPlagiarismScandal was still sitting at the top of the trending list.
She figured Evelina’s so-called “diamond prince” backer must have some serious pull. No matter what Dean or Claudia tried, they couldn’t get it taken down.
She tapped into the comments under the video. People online had already dug up every detail about Evelina, and the whole thing was blowing up.
Right then, a message popped up at the top of her screen.
She opened it without thinking.
It was from Dean: [For my sake, can you get that influencer to delete the video? Please?]
Emmy snorted out a laugh.
Back when she’d follow Dean around everywhere, her teachers were already saying she’d be a star in computer science.
Dean used to get competitive, always trying to beat her—until he realized he couldn’t. That’s when he switched to business and finance instead.
She was the one who started hiding her own talent, just trying to keep up with him.
So even if he hadn’t given her access, she still could have cracked Skyline System wide open.
If she hadn’t caught that Evelina’s award-winning system was a copy of her own, she wouldn’t have even realized Skyline System was plagiarized too.
She’d overestimated Evelina’s skills and underestimated just how shameless she could be.
Dean didn’t write back.
A few minutes later, the door to the hospital room swung open.
James came in holding a tube of ointment, eyes locked on her as he came over to the bed.
“Shirt off,” he said quietly.
Emmy turned bright red. “I can do it myself…”
James didn’t even pause. He reached over and started undoing her buttons.
Emmy tried to squirm away, but his voice was low and teasing, a gentle rasp that made her heart skip.
“What are you so shy about? There’s nothing here I haven’t seen. I’ve patched you up in places way more embarrassing than this. You’re really still embarrassed?”
