“Thinking about having a couple of kids just for fun?”
Emmy went still, her eyes fixed on the video of two chubby-cheeked toddlers, not saying a word.
Abriella scooted closer, her tone playful but genuinely curious. “Come on, seriously, you’ve never thought about having a baby with your husband?”
Emmy absentmindedly traced her finger across the back of her phone.
Before South America, she honestly hadn’t given it a thought. Actually, she’d kind of avoided the idea altogether.
But now…
She remembered James’s brush with death. The patience in his eyes. The way he’d asked, so careful, if she’d ever want kids…
Something inside Emmy shifted. If she’d already left her past behind, like it was just some half-remembered dream, why should it still hold her back?
Her voice was quiet, almost like she was surprising herself. “I didn’t want to before, but now…”
Abriella’s eyes went huge, her whole face bright with hope. “Now what?”
A gentle smile tugged at Emmy’s lips, her eyes softening.
She was about to answer when—
Knock, knock, knock.
Someone rapped on the hospital room door, totally wrecking the moment.
Abriella huffed, clearly annoyed. “Seriously? Who picks now to show up?” She stomped over and yanked the door open.
Standing there was a guy with a buzz cut, his skin tanned from the sun, his smile a little sheepish but warm.
He scratched his head when he saw Abriella. “Ms. Sullivan? James asked me to give Emmy a message. Can I come in?”
Emmy recognized the voice right away and called, “Yeah, of course, come in!”
He stepped inside and Emmy placed him—Brett, one of James’s guys.
She let out a frustrated sigh and glanced at Brett, who was standing by, ready for anything.
“I might need to swap out some of the internal parts. Can you check if I could buy this drone off the fire station?”
Brett shook his head, looking completely sincere. “No way, Emmy. We’re going to need your system for future rescues. Whatever you need, the station will provide, no questions asked. Seriously, don’t worry about it.”
Emmy thought for a second, then nodded. “Alright. Can you get me a set of precision tools for taking this apart?”
The tools arrived quickly. Emmy opened her safe, pulled out her custom control chip and data module, and started swapping out the drone’s parts.
Brett watched, eyes wide. He couldn’t wrap his head around how the woman so skilled and confident with hardware was the same sweet, gentle Emmy he’d met before.
Abriella just looked smug, chin up. “You think this is impressive? Back in college, Emmy built her own computer. This is nothing.”
It didn’t take long before all the new parts were in and the system booted up just right.
But as Emmy tried to start it up, a brand new problem popped up.
