The drone’s original optical sensor setup just wasn’t cutting it. It was way too weak to handle the demands of her AI’s high-speed visual tracking.
That’s when it hit her—the “Eagle Eye” sensor system used on military drones.
Emmy glanced at Brett, hesitated, and swallowed her words, a little embarrassed to ask for more help.
Brett caught on immediately and stepped up. “Emmy, you still missing something?”
She pointed at the circuit board, letting out a helpless sigh. “This sensor driver doesn’t have the power my AI core needs. I don’t have a spare, but I really need something stronger.”
Brett didn’t even blink. He grabbed his phone and stepped aside to make a call.
A minute later, he came jogging back with a big, goofy grin. “Emmy, just relax for a bit. James is done with his work—he’s bringing what you need right now!”
That caught Emmy off guard.
She put her tools down, washed her hands, and at Abriella’s insistence, joined them for lunch under the porch.
Not long after, a deep rumble grew louder and louder, shaking the windows.
“What’s that?” Abriella poked her head out, curiosity all over her face.
A second later, her eyes went wide. She nearly jumped out of her seat, grabbing Emmy’s arm.
“Oh my god! Emmy, look! That’s insane!”
Emmy looked where she was pointing. Out on the open lawn, two dark green military helicopters were landing, whipping up wild gusts of wind as they touched down.
Abriella let out a squeal. “Emmy, is that your husband?”
Emmy couldn’t take her eyes off the scene.
As soon as the choppers settled, the doors slid open.
A tall, quietly commanding man jumped down. He was in all black tactical gear—broad shoulders, long legs, looking every bit the action hero. Heavy combat boots thudded against the grass as he strode over.
He took off his helmet, revealing short-cropped hair and a face that was all sharp lines and rugged good looks.
No mask, just a strong jawline and a hint of danger clinging to him, like he’d just walked out of a battlefield. He headed straight for her.
Emmy just stared, totally entranced.
A faint blush crept up his ears.
He cleared his throat, looked away, and nodded toward the drone behind him. “Go check it out. See if it’s got what you need.”
Pearl had been caught, but plenty of his people were still on the run.
They’d been out clearing another hideout at dawn, and this drone had been used for recon. Most of the others had already gone back.
As soon as James heard Emmy needed a part, he’d taken the nearest one.
Suddenly Emmy really saw it—the huge, imposing machine.
She hurried over, heart racing. This was the first time she’d been this close to an actual military drone.
All those specs and reports she’d read before suddenly felt real and alive.
The drone’s body was all hard edges and raw power, every piece looking tough and perfectly engineered.
Eyes sparkling, Emmy turned to James. “Can I take it apart?”
