Nico leaned in, eyes sparkling with curiosity and a hint of mischief.
“Come on, Emmy! You have no idea how dramatic your entrance was—it was legendary! Seriously, it looked like a scene straight out of an action movie. You just dropped out of the sky. Be honest, did you plan that?”
Emmy couldn’t help laughing, almost choking on her food. She swallowed quickly and waved her hand in defeat.
“It’s a long story. Honestly, I just got held up on the way here.”
“But I got lucky—some soldiers helped me out, and I made it just in time.”
She made it sound casual, clearly not wanting to get into the details. The others picked up on her vibe and didn’t push her for more.
As long as she was here safe and sound, nothing else mattered.
But Emmy wouldn’t dream of telling the real story.
How could she possibly admit that the truth was... she’d just slept in?
The past few days had been a blur. After James went dark, she’d felt like she was walking on a tightrope, nerves stretched thin. She barely ate, and every night was a battle just to fall asleep.
Yesterday, she’d been up before sunrise, glued to her phone, waiting for any word from James.
It wasn’t until two in the morning that Brett finally showed up with news—James and his team were back, debriefing at the base.
To calm her down, Brett told her everything.
A foreign scam ring had tricked a bunch of young people with promises of high-paying jobs, then lured them overseas and trapped them in Country T under the excuse of a company retreat. James’s mission was to go deep undercover and bring those kids home.
The operation was so risky and the syndicate so heavily armed that the military had to cut off all outside communication to keep everyone safe.
Brett added that once James finished up, he’d fly straight back to the Capital on a military chopper.
For the first time in days, Emmy could finally breathe again.
But after so much stress, her exhaustion caught up to her fast. She slept so deeply that by the time James finished everything and rushed to the hospital, all he found was Emmy, sound asleep for the first time in days.
Not wanting to wake her, he even silenced her alarm.
“You really don’t know? Mr. Nelson was the main sponsor for this competition! You were late, right? He’s the one who told the organizers to hold your spot.”
“Otherwise, do you really think they’d let your assistant draw your lot? The Star Cup is a big deal—they’ve held it three times and no one’s ever done that before. You’re the first.”
Emmy stared at him, shocked and more than a little lost.
“But how did he know I’d make it in time?”
Nico shrugged.
“No idea. Maybe the military passed the word along? I heard the message came from some guy in uniform, and he looked pretty official.”
The military?
Was James behind this, too?
It wasn’t enough for him to fly her in like something out of an action movie—he’d also quietly cleared the way for her, making sure everything was ready even before she knew it herself.
