Just as Emmy was spacing out, a soft, steaming meatball landed right in her bowl.
Teresa looked at her with gentle concern, her eyes full of worry.
“Eat some meat, sweetheart. Don’t just nibble on veggies. Look at your little face—you’ve lost weight in just a few days.”
Emmy glanced down at the meatball, feeling an odd wave of resistance. It looked oily, and just the thought of eating it made her feel queasy. But this was her mom, and she didn’t want to hurt Teresa’s feelings. She forced a smile, picked up the meatball, and took a delicate bite.
The moment the rich, meaty taste hit her tongue, a wave of nausea shot straight up her throat.
She slapped a hand over her mouth, her stomach churning.
Frantically, Emmy scanned the room for a trash can.
Nico was the fastest to react. He darted over, grabbing the trash bin from the corner and setting it next to her just in time.
Emmy leaned over and spit out the bite, her face pale. Then she grabbed her water glass and gulped down a few mouthfuls, barely managing to settle her stomach.
Teresa’s face was a mix of shock and worry.
“What’s going on, honey? The meatballs are really good.”
Emmy waved her hand, trying to look okay even though her face had gone white.
“I don’t know. Lately I just… can’t stand the smell of meat. It makes me feel sick.”
Teresa, with all her life experience, suddenly looked startled.
“Emmy, don’t tell me you’re—”
Emmy quickly shook her head.
“Mom! No way, it’s not that. I promise!”
She rushed to explain.
“I probably just haven’t been sleeping well. Maybe my stomach’s a bit off.”
But Teresa didn’t look convinced. She frowned deeply, her skepticism obvious.
“Did you go to the doctor?”
Emmy nodded.
Emmy’s heart skipped a beat. She gripped the trophy tight and nodded, serious as ever.
“I understand, Master. This is just my starting point, not the finish line. I won’t let you down—any of you—or this era.”
After the awards, it was time for the patent ceremony for the AI system.
When the host read out Emmy’s “Infinity” system, she made the same stunning announcement as before.
“I’m donating all patents for the Infinity system, free of charge, to the National Fire and Rescue Agency.”
Cameras went wild, flashes lighting up the stage as every lens focused on the slim girl with a quiet, powerful presence.
In the midst of so many admiring eyes, the city’s Fire Department Chief walked up on stage. He wore a formal uniform, badges shining on his shoulders, and shook Emmy’s hand firmly.
“Ms. Lincoln, on behalf of firefighters across the nation—thank you.”
His voice was strong and full of emotion, his eyes shining with pride.
He handed her a golden certificate of honor and took a photo with her.
In that moment, no one shone brighter than Emmy.
