The air felt thick, like the world had stopped breathing.
James froze, panic flashing across his face as he stared at her, totally thrown off.
Emmy caught his look and couldn’t help but give a half-smile. “You already knew, didn’t you?”
She raised an eyebrow. “Did you really think hiding it from me was fun?”
James completely lost it, stumbling over his words. “No, that’s not it! Babe, I was just… I was scared, okay? I was afraid you’d want to get rid of the baby if you found out.”
Emmy just stared at him, stunned.
Get rid of the baby?
The thought was almost laughable.
“Why would you ever think I’d do something like that?” she asked, her voice flat.
James clamped his lips together, but then his panic shifted. For a second, pure hope flickered in his eyes. “So… you’re not going to… you wouldn’t, right?”
Emmy didn’t say a word. She shoved past him, got up, and headed straight for the bathroom.
James rushed after her but she slammed the door right in his face.
Inside, Emmy glared at herself in the mirror, her anger simmering.
Sure, she’d always pushed back on the idea of having a baby. But now that it was possibly happening—for real, with her own child—how could he think she’d be so cold?
She’d honestly thought he’d kept it a secret to surprise her, to do something sweet.
Turns out, he was just scared she’d want to end the pregnancy.
So that’s all he saw when he looked at her? Someone heartless?
James’s voice came through the door, thick with regret. “Babe, I’m sorry. Please, don’t be mad, okay?”
Emmy ignored him.
Once she’d finished getting ready, she opened the door without looking in his direction and walked straight to the dining room.
The head doctor was a woman with a stellar reputation in all the right circles. Appointments were booked months in advance.
James had definitely pulled some strings to get them in so quickly.
Still, when they arrived, one person was still being seen.
In the waiting area, Emmy sat stiff and silent, her face unreadable.
James knew he was in hot water, so he did his best to make himself useful.
He had her limited-edition handbag hanging from one arm, her cashmere scarf in his hand. As soon as Emmy sat down on the couch, he leaned over and whispered, “Are you too warm? Want to take off your coat?”
It was freezing outside, but the waiting room was cozy. She really was dressed a bit too warmly.
Emmy shrugged off her coat, and James instantly took it, folding it carefully and adding it to his growing pile.
There he was—six foot two, broad-shouldered, the very picture of a tough guy—sitting there with his arms full of her stuff, looking more like her personal assistant than her husband. The sight was honestly kind of hilarious.
