Emmy nodded and pulled Abriella up with her.
Abriella glanced back at Will, worry written all over her face.
“Relax,” Emmy said, giving her a reassuring squeeze. “Your cousin’s there. Nothing’s going to happen.”
They’d barely settled onto the living room couch when a loud crash echoed from the dining room, like a wine bottle hitting the floor.
For a moment, everything went completely silent.
Just as Emmy and Abriella thought the chaos was over, Steve’s slurred voice suddenly rang out.
“Will! You—you’re just a loser! Don’t even think about stealing my girl!”
Abriella went rigid, her eyes snapping to the dining room in disbelief.
Did she just hear that right?
Another crash.
Will shot up, knocking his chair over. He was just as drunk as Steve, swaying as he grabbed the half-full glass left on the table. He spoke, each word sharp and clear. “Steve, Abriella is my girlfriend now. If you try anything else, don’t blame me for what I’ll do.”
Steve wobbled, squinting at Will with a lazy smirk. “Oh yeah? What are you gonna do, hit me? Go on, try it.”
That was all it took to set Will off.
“Damn it!”
He swore and swung his fist at Steve’s face.
But right before the punch could land, a stronger hand shot out and caught Will’s wrist.
No one had even noticed James step between them. He held Will back, his voice icy. “You’re both drunk. Haven’t you made enough of a scene?”
Without waiting for their response, James pulled out his phone and made two quick calls.
A few minutes later, Steve’s guys and some firefighters showed up at the door. They each took one of the drunken men, dragging them out as they continued to mumble insults at each other.
Abriella had had some wine too, and now her head was pounding. She rubbed her temples, feeling completely drained.
She turned to Emmy. “Emmy, I’m going to head home.”
Without waiting for a reply, she stepped out to follow the others.
Emmy, still worried, called out to Ivy. “Ivy, can you walk Abriella out?”
James paused, letting out a sigh as he held her tighter.
He didn’t dodge the question. “Because he’s married. He can’t ask Abriella to be the other woman.”
Emmy jerked out of his hold, propping herself up on her elbows in shock. “What did you say?”
“Steve’s married? Are you serious?”
James pulled her back down, gently rubbing her back. “His family forced him to get married three years ago. They even went behind his back and got the marriage certificate with another woman.”
“He’s never admitted she’s his wife, so it’s always been a secret.”
“These past few years, he’s been trying everything to get divorced.”
Emmy was stunned. This was crazier than some plot twist out of a romance novel.
So in her last life, Steve only managed to chase after Abriella openly once he was finally divorced?
She blurted out, “Does Abriella know?”
James shook his head. “Steve has eyes and ears everywhere in the city. If he wants to keep something a secret, there’s no way anyone’s going to find out.”
