Emmy’s brows drew together as everything finally clicked. Now she understood why Steve, even though he obviously liked Abriella, had shoved her away so harshly when she tried to get close. He was protecting the one he truly loved, in his own quiet way—the one he couldn’t admit to wanting.
James watched her getting lost in thoughts about other people. Suddenly he leaned down, pressing a warm kiss to the middle of her forehead. “Stop thinking about them. Think about us instead.”
He took her hand and placed it over her stomach, where there was just the tiniest hint of a bump starting to show beneath their palms.
“Think about our baby,” he murmured.
“When I finish up these next couple of days, I’ll take you to the hospital and get everything set up for the baby.”
Emmy’s eyes curved into a smile as she nodded. “I was just about to talk to you about that—you always seem to know what’s on my mind.”
“Perfect. I’ll do a full checkup while we’re at it. Dr. Townsend said we’re far enough along to find out the gender. Let’s do that too.”
James’s arm tightened around her, his brows furrowing. He didn’t say anything, just gently rubbed her belly, lost in thought.
Why did it have to be twins?
Out of nowhere, memories from his dark childhood flooded back. He was scared his kids might have to go through the same pain he had. He never wanted that for them.
In the quiet, he let out a soft sigh, pushing all those heavy thoughts deep inside. All that was left was a gentle, almost aching whisper.
“Get some sleep.”
The next morning, James was out the door early for work.
Not long after, Danny rushed in, practically glowing with excitement. “Ms. Lincoln, you’re amazing! Claudia really did send people after me, just like you said!”
“But don’t worry, everything went according to your plan. The guys she sent barely made a move before the cops you arranged were on them. They’ve all been arrested!”
Danny’s cheeks were red with excitement. “Now there’s no way Claudia is going to risk her reputation for someone like me.”
