Ben’s smile was warm and gentle. “With a mind like yours, I’m sure everything will work out exactly the way you want.”
There was definitely more to his words than met the eye.
He wasn’t really part of the mess between the White family women and Emmy, but Ben saw it all clear as day. He took in the girl sitting across from him—freshly graduated, looking quiet and delicate, but sharp as a whip underneath it all.
She always managed to handle problems before anyone even noticed there was trouble. Nothing stuck to her; she slipped away from every mess, calm and untouched, watching from the sidelines as everyone else scrambled.
Ben had dealt with plenty of clever people in his life, but Emmy was something else. It made him a little uneasy, so he kept up his role as the well-meaning elder, making small talk about Infinity’s big launch, circling around safe topics.
But when the conversation finally started to run dry, Emmy was the one who broke the awkward silence.
Her voice was as soft as ever, but there was a subtle coolness this time. “If you’re really interested in Infinity, Mr. Sparrow, I can get you some information about it later.”
“I’ve got some things to take care of today, though, so I’ll be heading out.” She started to stand.
Ben stiffened, panic flashing across his face. Before she could leave, he blurted out, “Emmy, actually… there’s something else I wanted to ask you. I know it’s a bit much.”
She paused, halfway out of her seat, then slowly sat down again. Her lashes dropped, hiding the flicker of sarcasm in her eyes.
Here it comes.
He’s finally getting to the real reason for this meeting.
But instead of looking at her, Ben’s gaze landed on the man next to her—a guy with a presence that filled the entire room.
“Mr. Nelson, what I want to discuss with Emmy is a family matter. I hope you don’t mind giving us a moment alone?” Ben’s meaning couldn’t have been more obvious.
James raised an eyebrow, leaning back in his chair, his eyes sharp and cold on Ben. The tension in the air got thick fast.
Emmy already knew what Ben wanted, but she was curious how far he’d go—this man she’d once admired for his integrity—just to ask for her help.
Besides, she had her own reasons for being here.
She reached under the table and gently put her hand on top of James’s. “Just wait for me outside, okay?”
He frowned, not hiding his worry, but didn’t move.
She squeezed his hand, giving him a steady look that said, I’ll be fine.
His lips pressed into a thin, unhappy line, but after a moment, he stood up. Right before he left, he shot Ben a cold, lingering glare that couldn’t be mistaken for anything but a warning.
