Emmy met his stunned eyes without a flicker of emotion.
She even gave a little laugh. “You’re really overthinking this.”
“I just happened to hear the rumor. I got curious, that’s all. I wanted to ask someone about it,” she said, her voice calm and unbothered.
Dean’s tense heart dropped like a stone.
Thank God. It’s not true. It’s not true.
But almost immediately, a deeper worry crept in. How would Emmy just randomly overhear a rumor like that? These days, only the most elite old-money families still cared about things like bloodlines and heirs. Most rich families didn’t believe in that stuff anymore.
He forced himself to ask, voice thick, “Are you… trying for a baby again?”
Emmy didn’t answer. She didn’t confirm or deny it.
That silence rattled Dean more than any straight answer could have.
He started to panic. “Do you really want a kid that badly?”
He caught himself, took a breath, and softened his tone, desperate to hold it together.
“I mean… could you not… have a child with someone else?”
“Do you even know him? He—”
“Dean.” Emmy cut him off, her voice cold as ice.
“Women aren’t just men’s accessories, and we’re definitely not baby machines.”
“It’s not about who I’m having a baby for. It’s about whether he’s worth it—if I actually want to have a child with him.”
She paused, her gaze cutting straight through him.
“And even if I don’t know him that well, I know for sure he wouldn’t sneak birth control into my drinks while I was trying to get pregnant.”
It hit Dean like a slap.
His eyes went wide, shock etched on his face.
She knew?
No. No way.
He’d been so careful. He never let any of the staff near it—he’d always put the pills in himself. How could she possibly know?
Then, in a flash, a memory he’d tried to bury came rushing back. That last day before everything changed, she’d gone through his briefcase. She hadn’t just found Evelina’s photo. Had she also found the birth control pills he’d hidden in the lining?
Dean’s breath caught in his throat.
All the color drained from his face. He looked like he’d seen a ghost.
He opened his mouth, but nothing came out except a strangled, broken whisper. “I… I didn’t…”
Emmy watched him, feeling a bitter kind of amusement.
