Dean finally let go, though he was clearly annoyed. “Fine. I’ll talk to building management and get that car’s access revoked.”
The second Emmy was free, she turned to leave, desperate to get away.
But as soon as she spun around, she nearly crashed into a pair of deep, dark eyes.
James was already standing right in front of her.
Her heart jumped. He must have seen everything.
James didn’t bring it up. He just stepped forward, took her hand in his, and shot Dean a cold look.
“If you touch her again, you’ll regret it.”
Dean raised an eyebrow, his voice full of challenge. “If I hadn’t stepped in, she would’ve been hit by that car. Was I supposed to just watch?”
James glared at him, then looked down at Emmy, checking her over to make sure she was okay. Without another word, he pulled out his phone and called property management.
“There’s a black sedan speeding near Building Seven. Check the security footage and deal with it by the book.”
Applewood Estate was strict about the speed limit. If a car got caught speeding and the owner reported it, the car would get blacklisted. After that, it wasn’t getting in again.
James hung up, grabbed Emmy’s hand, and turned to leave. He tossed his Bentley keys to a waiting bodyguard like it was nothing.
Dean just stood there, watching James move with such force and confidence, his eyes growing darker by the second.
—
The elevator ride was painfully awkward.
Neither of them spoke.
James had expected at least a little explanation. Why was she with Dean? What was up with that almost-hug he’d seen?
But Emmy didn’t say a word. She pulled her hand away and fussed with her coat.
James watched her. Underneath, she was still wearing her golf outfit.
He broke the silence first. “Did you go out with Abriella?”
“She was busy. Couldn’t meet,” Emmy said lightly, her voice giving nothing away.
James frowned, unable to hold back. “So, why were you with Dean?”
Emmy’s tone stayed flat. “Ran into him. Just chatted for a minute.”
Not a single extra word.
James’s brow tightened in frustration.
The elevator chimed and the doors slid open.
