The air inside the car felt heavy, almost suffocating.
James sat quietly for a moment, then pulled a card from his jacket pocket and handed it to his assistant.
“Go to the usual place and pick out some gifts for my wife. Leave them in my car.”
It was his department’s shopping card, loaded with years of saved-up points and bonuses—he’d never used it himself, and there was plenty on it.
The assistant took the card with both hands, nodding fast.
Right then, another assistant stepped forward, offering a phone. “Sir, your phone started ringing just now.”
James took it, his thumb tracing the cool metal edge out of habit.
It was an old phone. The case had been replaced a few times, but inside, everything was still set up the way Jamie had left it. He’d kept this phone so he could stay in touch with people from Jamie’s world.
But lately, barely anyone messaged him on it. The few that did were all work stuff.
He unlocked the screen.
His finger paused.
At the top of the screen, Emmy’s name popped up.
He remembered suddenly—she’d added this number back when he fixed that bug in Letter from the Other Side. He never let strangers onto this phone, not unless there was a real reason.
But Emmy was the only exception.
He opened the chat and read her message:
James, do you have time soon? I was hoping to invite you to dinner.
James hovered over the keyboard for a long second, thinking.
Then he finally replied:
Next weekend. I’ll send you the details later.
He glanced through the rest of his messages, saw there was nothing urgent, and handed the phone back to his assistant.
Then he took his suit jacket and started changing.
With the last button done up, the down-to-earth firefighter James was gone. In his place was James—the aloof, untouchable version everyone else knew. Jamie.
.
Applewood Estate.
Emmy was just about to put her phone away when Mr. Nelson’s reply came in.
Next weekend. I’ll send you the details later.
She stared at the message, a little stunned.
He actually said yes?
Well, looks like she’d really have to help Isabel with this.
