Twins?
Emmy went still.
She had expected two boys or two girls—she hadn’t even considered one of each.
When the ultrasound was over, she sat up and grabbed a tissue, wiping the cool gel from her stomach. The doctor beside her was still grinning with excitement, but Emmy just offered a quiet, “Thank you.”
Later, in Dr. Townsend’s office, Emmy barely had a foot in the door before Dr. Townsend looked up, eager and expectant.
“So? Did you check the genders this time?”
Emmy nodded. “A boy and a girl.”
Dr. Townsend let out a breath, visibly relieved, and then started showering her with congratulations.
“Mrs. Lincoln, this is amazing news! What a blessing! In nearly twenty years as a doctor, this is only the second boy-girl twin set I’ve ever delivered. You’re so lucky!”
“One of each! That’s the dream, isn’t it? Your husband is going to be thrilled!”
Emmy listened quietly, thanked her, then hesitated a second before asking, “Dr. Townsend, have you heard those stories about twin boys?”
The smile faded from Dr. Townsend’s face, and she waved her hand as if to brush the topic away. “Oh, don’t worry about those old superstitions. That’s just about twin boys. Boy-girl twins are always seen as a good omen, a blessing for any family.”
Emmy pressed on. “So… twin boys are considered unlucky? Just because they’re the same gender, it’s that different?”
Dr. Townsend sighed. “Ms. Lincoln, you know there’s no real science to any of that. But in families that care a lot about inheritance, people get hung up on these things. For generations, only one child could inherit, so two boys meant rivalry and trouble. Over time, it turned into a superstition.”
Emmy got it.
Something that should have meant double happiness had been twisted into a curse—thanks to human greed and selfishness.
She didn’t even want to imagine what might happen to a child born as an ‘unlucky twin.’ What if they actually had to give one up? The thought of that innocent child being abandoned made her heart ache.
Back at Applewood Estate, Emmy still felt heavy, even with the news that she was having a boy and a girl. There was no joy at all.
It was late when James finally came home.
He showered, got himself cleaned up, and slipped into bed. The moment he lay down, he instinctively reached for her, wrapping his arms around her waist and leaning in for a kiss.
Emmy turned her face away.
It was such a tiny move, but it made all his recent anxieties loom even larger, crashing over him like a wave.
“Babe, you’re still mad at me?”
Emmy didn’t say a word. Her silence was answer enough.
