After lunch, Emmy gave Abriella a quick call and headed over to City Hall.
The moment she stepped out of her car, Abriella came charging at her like she hadn’t eaten in days, wrapping her up in a huge, enthusiastic hug.
“My sweet Emmy! I knew you hadn’t forgotten your poor, starving friend!” Abriella squeezed her a little too tight, and if they weren’t out in public, Emmy was pretty sure Abriella would have gone in for a kiss, too.
Emmy laughed, both exasperated and amused. “Alright, alright, let’s find somewhere to eat first.”
Abriella just pointed to the front doors of City Hall. “I’m supposed to keep an eye on someone, so I can’t leave. We’ll just eat here!”
With Emmy in tow and the lunchbox swinging from her hand, Abriella found a spot tucked away from the wind, plopped down cross-legged, and set the food out right on the ground.
The second she opened the lid, the smell was incredible.
“Whoa! Red wine braised beef, sweet-and-sour ribs, and pork belly!” Abriella’s eyes lit up as she grabbed a big piece of meat and shoved it into her mouth. Then she paused, giving Emmy a suspicious look.
“Hold up… Everything in here is meat. You know I’m not a total carnivore.” She squinted, smirking. “Be honest—was this actually a love-packed lunch for your boyfriend?”
Emmy smiled, but there wasn’t much warmth in her eyes. “Of course not. You’ve been working yourself to the bone lately, so I thought you could use a little extra care.”
Abriella snickered, apparently buying it, and helped herself to another big bite of beef.
“Oh, right,” she said suddenly, looking up. “Why’d you hang out with Isabel last weekend? Mandy sent me a picture of you two.”
“Didn’t you say Isabel might be getting close to Claudia? And you still went out with her?”
Emmy answered calmly, “She’s been asking me to hang out for ages. I can’t say no every single time. Plus, I wanted to see what she was up to.”
She paused for a second, then added, “I just found out she and Mr. Nelson used to have a thing.”
Abriella choked so badly, she almost turned purple. Emmy quickly handed her the thermos. Abriella took a huge gulp, then made a face as the hot soup burned her tongue. She fanned her mouth, eyes wide.
“Don’t just believe everything she says! Did Mr. Nelson ever say anything about it?”
Emmy shook her head. “Whether it’s true or not, she definitely likes him.”
