Abriella never saw that question coming. Her hand froze, fork hovering in midair.
She quickly ducked her head, stuffing a mouthful of potatoes and beef, swallowing hard before glancing up again, trying to play it cool.
“Why are you asking me? If you want to know, why not just ask my cousin yourself?”
Emmy frowned and shook her head. “I don’t want to ask him.”
Abriella’s confusion deepened. “Why not?”
Emmy hesitated, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’m not sure what he’s been through. If I push too hard, I might bring up stuff that hurts him.”
She already knew her questions lately might have touched a nerve, opened up scars he’d buried deep. But she couldn’t just let it go. She needed to figure out what was holding him back.
She couldn’t let her baby come into the world already missing out on a father’s love.
Abriella stared at her for a few seconds before sighing. “Then maybe just let it be.”
Emmy’s frown deepened. “But what happened to him?”
Abriella kept her eyes on the beef in her takeout box, her voice muffled. “Honestly, I don’t really know the details.”
“All I can say is, my cousin grew up with no one in his corner—not his dad, not his mom. He was always a little loner. Just love him a bit more, that’s all you can do now.”
Emmy felt a sharp pang in her chest.
She couldn’t hold back. “Is it true that both your families are superstitious about twins?”
Abriella jerked, staring up at her with wide eyes. “You... you know about that?”
She hurried to explain, “That’s just old superstition, really! Nobody cares anymore. A few years ago, my other cousin had twins—two boys. They’re four or five now, bouncing off the walls, cute as heck, totally fine! Don’t let rumors freak you out.”
Emmy let out a soft sigh. “It’s not me who’s scared. It’s your cousin. I just wish I knew what he’s so afraid of.”
Abriella went quiet, her face clouding over like she was lost in some bad memory. She didn’t say another word.
She finished her food in silence, shut the box, and started packing up.
Just then, she spotted a group of men in suits walking out of the admin building.
The man straightened his suit, giving her a cold glare. “Tell her to give up. And you—if I see you again, you’ll regret it.”
With that, he got in a black sedan and drove off.
As soon as he was gone, Abriella’s fake smile vanished. She turned and kicked the steps behind her, frustration boiling over.
A lifetime’s worth of crap, all in one moment.
If it weren’t for this stupid job, she would’ve loved to punch that cheating jerk right in the face. He was the one who cheated, kept a mistress, and now, just to save his career, he refused to divorce—pushing his wife to the edge.
She was so mad she could scream.
A sarcastic laugh snapped her out of it.
Abriella spun around.
Steve was leaning against a stone pillar nearby, arms crossed, watching her with that amused spark in his eyes—like he was enjoying every second of her misery.
