Dean ignored her question, just repeating stubbornly, “Add me back first.”
Emmy pressed her lips together, but in the end, she took out her phone and, right in front of him, removed his number from the blocked list.
Once her phone was away, she kept her tone steady and rational. “Now that she’s the Prime Minister’s wife, Claudia has more protection than ever. The people backing her are even more powerful. Unless we have rock-solid evidence, there’s no way to take her down from her pedestal.”
Dean saw his contact restored and couldn’t help but smirk, clearly pleased.
“To beat someone that shady, you have to get even shadier.”
The elevator chimed and the doors slid open.
Dean lifted his phone and tossed her a meaningful look. “Let’s talk on the phone.”
Then he strode out without looking back.
Abriella was waiting just ahead. When she saw Emmy and Dean walk out of the elevator together—and caught that “let’s talk on the phone”—her eyes went wide in disbelief.
She hurried over and grabbed Emmy’s arm. “What’s going on? Tell me you didn’t actually take Dean back! That jerk?”
Emmy’s calm eyes flickered and she just said, “Yeah.”
Claudia was ruthless. Her connections ran deep, tangled enough to make even the government nervous. Emmy knew if she acted alone, she’d always be a step behind. But Dean… maybe he really did have a way to pull Claudia down.
Of course, she didn’t want Abriella to worry about all that.
“We’re just friends again,” Emmy said.
“What?!” Abriella stared at her like she’d grown a second head. “Seriously? After everything he did, you forgive him the second he says something nice?”
Emmy sighed, looping her arm through Abriella’s and steering her toward the parking lot. She glanced around to make sure Dean was gone before she finally answered.
“Don’t worry. I’m not forgiving him. I just… have my reasons for being friends with him again.”
Abriella finally let out a breath but still muttered, “Even if you have your reasons, if my cousin finds out, he’s going to flip. He’s so jealous.”
Then she suddenly leaned in, suspicious. “By the way, what’s going on with you and your husband lately? Will told me my cousin’s back at base and working everyone into the ground. The whole team’s suffering.”
Emmy paused, then gave a half-smile. “I guess he’s annoyed I’m having twins for him.”
After a few minutes of small talk, Abriella flashed Emmy a quick look and slipped away, sneaking upstairs to try to get the family registry.
Mandy started to follow, but Emmy called her back.
“Mandy, can I ask you about someone?”
Mandy stopped, a little annoyed. “Who?”
“Your cousin. James. Are you two close?”
Mandy looked at her like she’d lost it. “James? Your husband? Since when is he my cousin?”
Emmy stared, puzzled. She turned to Mr. Sullivan. “Uncle, isn’t James your nephew?”
Mr. Sullivan looked just as confused. He frowned and thought for a moment, then shook his head.
“James? There aren’t many people with that last name around here, but I definitely don’t have a nephew named James.”
