“I have something else to take care of,” James said, his voice low.
Emmy just nodded and let it go.
But instead of driving to the hospital, James pulled up in front of a little restaurant.
He turned off the car. “Let’s eat first. Things are easier to handle on a full stomach.”
He didn’t wait for her reply. He got out, came around, and opened her door for her.
James never forgot about her stomach problems. He knew she couldn’t afford to go hungry.
From the moment she stepped out of the car until they made it into their private booth, he kept her hand in his, not letting go for a second.
Even when they sat down, he slid in right next to her, close enough that Emmy could feel the heat from his body.
He was definitely getting more clingy these days.
Most of her anger had faded, but there was still a knot in her chest.
She remembered what Abriella had told her: “My cousin grew up without his parents’ love. He’s always been this lonely little guy. Just be good to him, okay?”
So, after a moment, Emmy picked up a shiny, tender piece of braised pork and dropped it into James’s bowl.
“Eat more,” she said quietly.
James’s eyes lit up, so bright it was almost like the whole restaurant got a little warmer.
He looked like he’d just won the jackpot. He scooted his chair even closer, turning their roomy booth into a tight little corner.
He popped the pork into his mouth and let out a happy sigh.
“Food tastes better when you give it to me,” he said, turning toward her. His deep eyes were locked on hers, his voice soft and just a little playful.
“I want more. What should I do?”
Emmy could only stare at him, speechless. He really knew how to push his luck.
With a sigh, she just gave in and started piling more meat into his bowl.
James was a total carnivore—every time they ate out, he’d order enough meat to feed an army, and somehow he always finished it all.
Emmy was still worried about Abriella and didn’t have much of an appetite. But watching James eat so happily made her hungry too, and before she knew it, she’d eaten half a bowl of rice.
