After running around all day, Emmy was wiped out.
She got home, took a quick shower, and flopped onto her bed. Before falling asleep, she reached for her phone—it was a habit she couldn’t break.
The screen lit up, and she finally opened that one chat she’d been ignoring.
Ever since she’d taken Dean off her block list that morning, he’d been messaging her non-stop. She hadn’t even glanced at the notifications—she just hadn’t been in the mood.
But now she started reading.
The first message was about the hundred million.
Your assistant is something else. She actually found the trust fund my mom set up before she died and managed to funnel the money through a foundation straight into my personal account. There’s no way to send it back now, not even if I wanted to!
A small smile flickered on Emmy’s lips. Danny never let her down.
Then came the second message.
I don’t need your money. Why are you trying so hard to shove it at me? Emmy, do we really have to keep score like this? Are we really that distant?
An hour later, his patience was clearly wearing thin.
You’re ignoring me unless we talk about Claudia, is that it?
Say something!
The last message was from two hours ago, and it sounded like he’d finally given in.
Claudia’s weak spot is Evelina. If you want to get to her, you have to find out where Evelina is.
Emmy thought for a second, then typed out a reply.
Let’s start with Evelina. Where did your dad send her for safekeeping?
She’d barely hit send before the screen showed: Dean is typing…
So he’d been waiting for her.
Just then, the bathroom door opened.
James walked out with just a towel hanging low on his hips, water dripping down his abs and tracing the lines of his body before vanishing into the towel. He looked like he’d stepped straight out of a steamy magazine shoot.
Emmy’s breath caught, and she quickly locked her phone and tossed it onto the nightstand, feeling a little guilty.
But her eyes had a mind of their own and couldn’t help but linger.
James noticed the heat in her gaze. He started toward the closet, but changed his mind and walked right over to her instead.
He leaned down, still radiating the warmth and scent of his shower, and pressed a kiss to her cheek.
“Why are you looking at me like that?” His voice was low and rough from the shower, so deep it sent a shiver down her spine.
