James caught the mischievous spark in her eyes, both amused and helpless.
He reached out, pulling her into his arms. Then, right there in front of everyone, he leaned down and kissed her.
It was quick, but it made his point.
“Of course,” he said, voice low and rough as he let her go, “so, am I officially your boyfriend now?”
The girl beside them went pale with anger, stomped her foot, and walked away.
Emmy, looking completely pleased, laced her fingers through his and tilted her chin up. “Come on, let’s hit the claw machines.”
Her luck was unreal. In no time, she’d won an armful of stuffed animals she liked.
By the time they left the arcade, James’s hands were so full he could barely hold everything.
A few steps down, they passed a VR game shop.
A huge screen outside showed the poster for Echoes from the Other Side, still front and center. The place was packed.
Emmy stared up at the poster, then turned to James. “Is there anyone you wish you could see again, but can’t? This game says it can make that happen. Want to try it?”
James looked at the screen, his eyes dark, and didn’t say a word.
A couple who’d just come out of the store overheard and grumbled, “Don’t bother. Bookings are full for today. If you want to play, you gotta get here first thing in the morning.”
Emmy was surprised. She had no idea Echoes from the Other Side was this much of a craze.
She shook her head. “Nelson Corporation must be raking it in. Bet they’ll break into the global top hundred by the end of the year.”
James didn’t comment.
Emmy didn’t push him. She just took his hand and kept walking.
Soon, their security guards showed up and gathered all their shopping and the pile of stuffed toys, hauling everything back to the car.
Walking past a baby store, Emmy grabbed James’s arm and pulled him inside.
It was her first time in a place like this.
“James, look!” She picked up a tiny baby shoe, eyes wide with wonder. “This is so small! Are babies’ feet really this tiny?”
“And these clothes! Oh my god, they’re adorable. This one’s barely bigger than a handkerchief.”
“Look at these socks! I could stretch it out with one finger.”
“Wow, even the bottles are cute.”
James blinked, then realized what she was thinking. He almost laughed, but let her think what she wanted, a small smile tugging at his lips.
At the register, Emmy grabbed her phone to pay.
James didn’t mind at all. He’d already handed over his salary card ages ago, so he just stood there quietly, both hands packed with shopping bags, looking every bit the reliable boyfriend.
After the baby shop, they checked out a couple more clothing stores. Eventually, Emmy’s feet started to ache.
She found a bench in the rest area and sat down. James set their bags aside and sat next to her.
A moment later, he gently lifted her legs onto his lap.
His big, warm hands wrapped around her ankle. He started massaging, just the right amount of pressure.
People passed by, some glancing over with curiosity.
Emmy’s cheeks warmed. She tried to pull her leg away on instinct.
“Don’t move,” James said, holding her ankle steady. “Let me do this. You’ll feel better.”
His touch was perfect, easing the ache in her legs. Emmy relaxed and let him take care of her.
