Emmy froze, staring at him in shock.
She hadn’t expected him to say something so serious, so out of the blue.
“But… aren’t we already married?” she asked, almost laughing at the absurdity.
“I mean actually dating,” James said, totally earnest. “Couples who never date—it’s hard for them to go the distance. I want us to last forever.”
He leaned closer, his hand warm as it covered hers on her lap, fingers threading through hers and squeezing gently.
“So tonight, we’re not heading home. We’re going on a date.”
The car pulled out of the hospital parking lot and disappeared into the flow of city lights.
Emmy felt her heart flutter, like someone had strummed a string somewhere deep inside her.
Dating?
She never imagined that even after getting married—and now, pregnant—she’d get to fall in love all over again. It felt new and exciting. Especially because it was with James.
To everyone else, he was all hard edges and icy stares. But with her, he was this mix of bossy, gentle, and a little bit of a troublemaker. She couldn’t help but wonder: what was James like as a boyfriend?
For the first time in ages, she found herself genuinely looking forward to something.
They pulled into the underground parking lot of a massive shopping mall.
James got out first, looping around to open her door before she even reached for the handle. He grabbed her purse like it was second nature and, without thinking, took her hand in his.
Inside, the mall was toasty and alive with people—full of real life, laughter, the hum of conversations.
James walked beside her, their hands linked, just like any regular couple out for the evening.
As they passed a jewelry shop, Emmy slowed down, drawn in by the sparkle of the window display.
“Want to check it out?” James caught on right away, his voice dropping to a soft rumble.
She nodded and tugged him inside.
Suddenly, she felt like a teenager again. She picked up a glittery headband and tried it on, then grabbed a pair of fluffy cat-ear clips and turned to show James.
He stood there in black from head to toe—turtleneck and overcoat, sharp and serious, completely out of place in this pastel, girly shop.
A spark of mischief flickered in Emmy’s eyes.
She snatched a set of pink bunny ears and, on tiptoe, popped them onto James’s head before he could react.
