When their day together finally ended and they got back to the car, the sky was already completely dark. The city lights flickered on, casting a soft glow over everything.
James kept one hand on the steering wheel, the other tightly holding Emmy’s hand. Their fingers stayed laced, neither wanting to let go. The car moved smoothly through the quiet streets, and out of nowhere, tiny white specks began to fall outside the window.
Emmy’s eyes sparkled. She leaned closer to the glass, grinning. “Wow, it’s snowing!”
James pulled into a parking spot at Applewood Estate, easing the car to a stop. Before he could even unbuckle, Emmy had jumped out and was standing under the streetlamp. She tilted her head back, catching the snowflakes in her hand, laughing like a kid.
“Honey, it’s really snowing!” she called, her whole face lit up with joy.
James quickly joined her, taking off his coat and wrapping it around her from behind. He pulled her close, holding her and her outstretched hand tight in his embrace.
“Yeah,” he said softly, his chin resting on her head. “First snow of the year.”
Emmy adored the snow. Standing there in his arms, she didn’t want to move, didn’t want the moment to end. She let him hold her as they strolled slowly under the yellow glow of the streetlamp, the world around them quiet except for the soft sound of falling snow.
A few bodyguards walked past them, carrying all the shopping bags from the car. They didn’t say a word, just took everything upstairs to Ivy and slipped away again.
Meanwhile, the snow started coming down harder. Flakes drifted and spun in the light, beautiful and slow, like something out of a movie. Emmy pulled out her phone and took a few pictures. She even snapped one of their long shadows stretching across the ground.
She couldn’t help herself. She opened her favorite social app and started typing out a post.
This year’s first snow, and my first real date with my husband.
She wanted to share a photo of her and James together, but he insisted that his face shouldn’t be online. So she posted the snow, their shadows, and the picture of their hands intertwined inside the car.
She had no idea that, up in one of the windows above, Dean was watching them through binoculars. He could see everything—the way James rested his chin on her hair, the way Emmy looked up at him, smiling so sweetly. Every second felt like a knife twisting in his chest, but he couldn’t look away. He watched until they disappeared into the building.
Dean set down the binoculars, picked up his new phone, and opened his own social app. Just as he thought, Emmy’s new post was right at the top. He stared at the photo of their hands, then typed out a comment he couldn’t hold back.
...
Back at home, Emmy rushed straight to the bathroom. James followed her all the way to the door, almost squeezing in beside her. It was like he just couldn’t stand to be apart from her, not even for a minute.
Steve chimed in, Ugh, everyone’s paired up except for me. I’m the only lonely one left.
Emmy shot back, Whose fault is that?
Then another comment popped up.
Isabel asked, Wait, you’ve never been on a date before? You two seem so in love. How did you build that connection?
Emmy paused, thinking back on the past few months with James. There hadn’t been any grand gestures or dramatic romance. Instead, everything had quietly grown between them—in the little things, the everyday moments.
She thought for a moment, then replied honestly.
You don’t need fancy dates to fall for someone. It can happen in all the small parts of life. But dates definitely heat things up.
And right then, she realized she was falling for him a little more.
