A notification popped up on Emmy’s phone. Dean again.
[Why’d you delete my comment? Feeling guilty?]
Her mood instantly chilled. She tapped open their chat and typed back,
[Did you forget my warning? Or are you determined to burn through the last bit of friendship we have left?]
She’d made it clear before. If he did anything else to mess with her marriage, their friendship would be over, no second chances. One little comment online wouldn’t rock things between her and James. That wasn’t the point. The problem was, Dean’s intentions were way too obvious.
If she wasn’t using him to help take Claudia down, she wouldn’t even pretend to be his friend. As soon as Claudia was out of the picture and couldn’t threaten her anymore, Emmy would block him without a second thought.
She watched the “typing...” bubble flicker for ages, but nothing came through. Whatever. She closed the chat.
Outside, James’s voice floated in. “What’s taking so long? Are you feeling okay?”
“I’m almost done!” Emmy called back, trying to sound cheerful.
She tucked her phone away, pulled herself together, and opened the door.
“Wait for me by the door. We’ll head back to the living room together,” James said as he slipped past her.
Emmy couldn’t help but smile. Back in school, she used to go to the bathroom holding hands with her best friends. Now that she was married, was she supposed to do the same with her husband? She rolled her eyes at herself and waited by the door.
Her phone buzzed again. Emmy assumed it was Dean, and her brow tightened, but then she saw the name—Abriella.
Her friend’s message was practically vibrating with excitement.
[OMG you finally did it! You went on a date with James!]
[Spill! How was it? Did you fall for him all over again?!]
Emmy laughed and hit the call button, walking a few steps toward the living room.
“Emmy! Hey!” Abriella picked up right away.
“How are you feeling?” Emmy asked, her voice gentle.
“I’m fine, just need to rest a few days. But I lost my job again. Figures, right?” Abriella sounded way more upbeat than Emmy expected.
