Juan spotted the gentle smile on her face and figured his apology was working, so he jumped right in.
“Emmy, don’t worry. From now on, I’m on your side at work. Whatever you need, just say it. I’ve got your back.”
Emmy’s phone buzzed in her hand.
James had sent a voice message.
She wanted to listen, just press play and hold it to her ear, but Juan was still talking beside her, going on and on like a mosquito you can’t swat away.
Annoyance crept up her spine. Emmy finally lifted her head, her gaze cool and distant as she looked at him.
“You’re being too loud. Can you leave for a minute?”
Juan froze, his words cut off. He just stood there, totally thrown.
Danny didn’t hesitate. He stepped forward and motioned toward the door.
“Mr. Carter, this way, please.”
Only then did Emmy bring her phone to her ear.
James’s voice came through, deep and a little breathless, that rough, magnetic tone sending a shiver right through her.
“Just finished training. Taking a break. All I can think about is you.”
The sound of his breathing hit her like a jolt of electricity.
In her mind, she saw him leaning over her, his breath hot, urgent, barely held back...
A rush of heat spread through her, sharp and sudden.
Oh god, she actually felt it.
Emmy sat up straighter, her cheeks burning. She quickly looked down, fingers tapping out a message as fast as possible.
Meanwhile, Juan was still staring, totally captivated.
He’d never seen Emmy like this before—cool but with a softness, her face flushed, her eyes shining. She was so beautiful it made his heart skip.
Danny gestured again, firmer this time.
“Mr. Carter, please.”
That snapped Juan out of it. He backed out reluctantly, looking like he’d just lost something important.
Emmy finished her message: [I’m at work. Stop trying to distract me.]
Emmy’s smile disappeared as a wave of impatience passed through her. She looked up to see a young woman in a sharp suit standing at the door.
Sylvia.
Emmy relaxed a little. “Come in.”
She quickly glanced down, sending one last message to James.
[I miss you, but I have to work now.] She added a kiss emoji for good measure.
James: [Okay. Text me when you’re free. 🤗]
Sylvia stepped inside, a little hesitant.
“Ms. Eincoln, am I interrupting something?”
Emmy put her phone away and patted her still-warm cheeks, slipping back into her professional self.
“No, you’re fine.”
She gave Sylvia a small nod. “Let’s get to the point. What’s going on with the project?”
Everything with the Starlight Agriculture Project had been running smoothly under Danny’s management. But now, right at the final signing, a few of the older board members were suddenly pushing back, making things complicated.
